Chapter 1
When there is so much darkness around you, sometimes the only way to escape... is to become one withe the darkness. To blend in till light comes, blinding, brightening, to show all the ugliness in you, around you.
That was the life that Tarden had on his barren planet. A life of killing both his own race and the monsters, all to survive. Because surviving was all he knew. It was all he had done his entire life. He had been abandoned at the place where he was born. Left as food, for those who wandered those lonely ways and for those despicable beings, the monsters, warped by an ancient evil, and incapable of any other thought but the rending of blood and flesh with their sharp teeth and claw-like nails. He almost died, until a passing dark thundercloud, rained down water on his infant body, awakening him to a terrible world, polluted with a blackish haze which barely let through any light from the dim sun, a dying world.
His instincts, ingrained within him, then took over, so that he used his last drop of energy to squeeze the life out of one of the small lifeforms which had gathered around him awaiting his imminent death, so that they could feast. As the other lifeforms scattered in a panic, Tarden brought up his small scrawny hands to his mouth, to drink in the energizing blood. As the minute amount of energy suffused him, he was then able to raise his head and see the huge mound, his mother, now dead after the violent childbirth. Her body though, was not yet rotted and was fresh enough to eat. So he gorged himself on the slightly ripe flesh, tearing with his small sharp teeth and filling his tiny stomach. He survived there for a few days until there was nothing left to eat, and he had to move to force his weak body to move to fresher pastures. Standing on tottering legs, he moved inch by agonizing inch, looking for food, occasionally catching the small mammals that moved through the sparse undergrowth.
Tarden was lucky, in that the area he was born in was a lonely stretch of ravaged land, barely populated by any large lifeforms, and hence less of his own kind or the monsters wandered about. This allowed him to gain a little energy and grow a bit more stronger than at the time of his birth. The infants of his race were born as partially matured adults tearing out of their mothers' wombs once the time was right. Killing from the time of birth, they were a race born to survive and thrive from the death of those around them. However they were extremely weak at birth and needed almost fifteen planet years to mature into full adults.
As things were, was almost a month before Tarden laid eyes on his first monster.
