CHAPTER 2:

Caity Horrocks:

“Caiticans!” Keely’s voice rang through the room.

“Get up! Get up! Get up!”

I reached my hand out of the sheets and grabbed the clock that stood on the bedside table. It was 5AM.

“Keely, what the hell? Why are you even up this early?” I sat up and looked at her. She was sitting on the end of my bed bouncing up and down excitedly… she reminded me of puppy.

“It’s sunrise! Remember, you said you would get up at sunrise with me today!”

I groaned. She was right. I had promised her that I’d get up so we could watch the sunrise together. I pulled the sheets off and put my dressing gown on.

The air was freezing outside. We were staying at our boyfriends’ holiday house for the weekend. It was a 17 acre countryside farm on the top of a hill in Ceres, Geelong. It over looked the town, the city of Melbourne and everywhere beyond up until Ballarat. It was spectacular. It was a 2 storey house with a large balcony/sitting area with stairs that lead down to the back porch underneath it. My boyfriend Zayn and his best mates, Niall, Harry, Louis and Liam owned all this land and of course Niall’s girlfriend (and my best friend) Georgie, had to have a pile of animals. Every morning was hell with them all, mooing, quacking, naying, bahing! It drove me insane! But I was glad we had them. They are heaps of fun and adorable… and quite useful at times. At least I didn’t have to look after them.

The sky went a pinky/orangey colour. The tip of the sun appeared over the horizon. And at that moment Keely’s iPod switched on… the circle of life… I should’ve known.

We sat there on the balcony with hot chocolates, ug boots and blankets. We had a good, whispered chat and at one point I helped Keely do her maths homework. We had to keep quiet though, Georgie and Niall’s room was just on the other side of the window behind us. Harry was alone in bed in him and Keely’s room on the other side of the window to our left. And Liam and Louis were helping the workers out in the paddocks trying to get the cows to move out of the road so they can get to the sheep. We could hear the truck puttering away. Keely stood up and put her gumboots on.

“What are you doing?” I asked.

“Going to see if I can help. You coming?”

I slowly dawdled along the muddy field finally reaching the rusty old pickup truck with bundles of hay piled in the back. The radio was playing and Keely was dancing away happily while trying to herd the cows off the road. Liam was pulling Old Betty, Louis was pushing Beth from behind, one of the workers, Jack, was slapping Tess’ behind and 2 of the other workers, Josh and Michael had gone to fetch the horses. Old Betty was a stubborn cow and didn’t like Liam one bit. She stamped her foot and mooed loudly at him, giving him a face full of boggers and spit. Beth heard Old Betty and moved about 2 steps forward to see what was going on making Louis fall flat on his face in mud. Jack had finally managed to get Tess off the road but there was still 4 cows left on the road. Everybody stopped and looked at Louis who was lying on the ground. He turned over and spat. Next thing I knew we were all laughing at him. Josh and Michael came galloping down the hill on 2 of the horses, Bell and Sheriff. Usually the horses were only used to herd sheep but this time it actually worked. Old Betty finally moved and the rest followed her.

“Good job.” Louis said, nodding awkwardly.

The radio was still playing. ‘Mix 101.1’ then, a familiar song came on. Georgie’s soft harmonic voice sang and everybody stopped to listen to Infinity’s one and only hit single, Flying Free. After this song Georgie tried desperately to keep us together and keep us going. She just about killed herself trying. She stayed up all night every night writing, she refused to eat and she rarely even spoke to us. She was always in her room or outside. Finally she finished writing about 5 more songs. She showed them to us and after some practice we went down to the recording studio. They turned us down. They said that we had had our moment of fame and that was it. We were finished.
