As Lincoln pulled into his driveway, after four days of sleeping in his car and cheap motels, he was greeted by his older brother, playing with his son up in the tree.
"So, why are you home this time? Ran out of money again?" Lincoln said, his words playful but deep down sincere. His older brother had left at eighteen to start his own coffee shop in the city mall. He moved in with his high school girlfriend, who a few months later became his fiancé, and then a year later his wife, and then two years later divorced him. With her she took half of 'their' money that Lincolns dad gave him to move out, to travel the world. And of course leaving Lincolns 22 year old brother to take care of a baby. At first it was tough, Haymitch not knowing how to change nappies or make up a bottle with formula, but after a few classes, and phone calls home to mother dearest, he soon learnt. Five years after the divorce and he still has the baby, who somehow survived.
"No, I'm not out of money, the cafe is going great, and I don't have any backstabbing wives to steal all mine." Haymitch was the family favourite. Star football player, straight A student, independent. Lincoln had no chance with this competition. "I'm here to see mum. Matty had a fever and I don't know what to do. She said to bring him over. Soon as I got here, he "miraculously" recovered. She invited us to stay for dinner, but she wasn't sure you'd be coming."
"Well, I left my card linked to my trust fund at home, so I had to come back" Lincoln said sarcastically. He didn't have a trust fund, not because his family couldn't afford it, but because apparently he didn't deserve it. Really they were afraid that if he had money he would leave, and that would really damage the family reputation.
"Don't be like that. Mum and dad mean we-"
"Oh. I have a dad now? I've barely fucking seen him in the last year. His too busy 'working' to come home to his fucking wife, who seems to miss the tool so fucking much she's taken all her fucking anger out on me! Bull shit they mean well."
"Uncle Lincoln said some naughty words" Matty sang out from the tree to his dad. "Time out and salty water for naughty Lincoln to wash his mouth out" if he wasn't so mad, Lincoln would have laughed. Matty was a cute kid, barely five, who sometimes got his words and phrases mixed around. Lincoln could never be mad at him. He just sighed.
"You know what? It doesn't matter. Have one of the maids bring me dinner up." Lincoln stormed up to his room.
"Lincoln, your home, about befo-" his mother was interrupted by a slam.
Lincoln sat calmly in his room, but all his angst became too much, and he lashed out and punched the wall. His fist went right through the plaster.
"Oh, shit!" He said out loud, shaking his hand, sighing in pain. He moved the photo frames around, till it sort of covered the whole. If you'd been in Lincolns room before, you'd know that something had changed, but it would do. He was just moving another picture to create more symmetry when he heard screaming coming from out the front. Matty. He dropped the picture, the glass smashing, and bolted down the stairs. He saw Matty, now on the ground, holding his limp, floppy hand. Haymitch stood comforting the poor boy.
"He fell from the tree, I think it's broken" he said as their mother joined them. "I think we better take him to the hospital"
------/
Matty had broken his arm, and quite badly, but he'd be ok. It would heal perfectly, the doctor said. The nurses at the hospital were all so caring for Matty, maybe because of his age and situation, but sat with a packet of stickers, all 'special'.
"Some of these stickers smell like chocolate, or bananas, or strawberry milkshakes" a male nurse said to Matty to distract him as the doctor put a cast over his arm. Lincolns stomach growled. He had barely ate all day, except for a lime milkshake.
"Hey, maybe I might go get some food? I hear there's a good takeaway shop on the corner" his brother said, obviously starving as well.
"No. You stay here for Matty. I'll go." Lincoln said, as he walked out the door.
Haymitch didn't exactly describe what takeaway shop he was talking about, nor did Lincoln ask anyone what they wanted. So he just went to the nearest fast food restaurant - Zambreros, and bought a few burritos and cans of drinks. He wasn't sure if Matty would eat anything, but just in case he bought him a chikito, a small burrito, with rice, chicken and tomatoes. That kid was one of the fussiest eaters, and Lincoln wasn't sure if he would even touch it. Oh well, it's the thought that counts. If he didn't, Lincoln could always get some nuggets from McDonald's.
Lincoln waited for the elevator to open. When it finally opened, the girl from the cafe the other day. Her curly hair was duller than before, but, she was still rather attractive. Lincoln gave her a smile as he stepped into the elevator, in which she returned, blushing.
