ilbarker's POV
Once I disconnected from Becca, I looked up at Jerome.
"So...what now?"
Jerome sighed. "In a little bit, we'll have to go see my brother, Jeremy. The baccas are a little startled by your sudden arrival...and the fact that you look like a human. They'll be pretty cautious, but with the doc claiming for what you said about hating humans, that should boost your trust with them all."
I sighed and leaned back against the wall, moving my wings to a less achy position. "But...how do we get to Mitch and Kirby?"
Jerome shrugged. "I dunno.... I don't know of any secret passageway and sneaking in is out of the question because...well, one wrong move and the entire tribe will be all up in our faces with axes. And I do mean that literally."
I winced. "Yeah, I'd rather not have an axe in my face...."
I did as the doc had told me and rested a bit.
I did ask Jerome about the phone he had from the end of the last book, but he just said he had lost it some time before finding the tribe.
*cough* Author forgot about the phone and didn't want it to come up again *cough*
Some time later, Jerome stood up and stretched slightly. "I think we should head out now."
I nodded and stood, stretching my wings slightly and flapping them a bit before letting them hang.
"How do you control those things? Is it like...I dunno, extra limbs?" Jerome asked.
I looked at my wings, wincing at the long scar on my left wing. "I...guess? I mean, I've never had wings before. They kinda just...appeared when Becca brought me back. It isn't too hard to control them, but it can get a bit weird when I'm trying to eat. I might try to grab the food with my right wing instead of my right hand. It's happened once."
Jerome chuckled. "Lez go."
I smiled and followed him out the door.
As we walked along, we came across a few baccas. Some of them shied away, but others seem to come closer. There was a child bacca that ran up to me, grinning widely. "Hi! Can you really fly?"
I paused, and so did Jerome. I nodded. "Yeah, I can. Sadly, though, my wings are not well enough to be able to be used right now."
Another bacca, probably the mother, came forward and picked up the child. She looked at me for a moment before walking away.
"But momma, she's so cool!" The child whined.
I chuckled quietly and continued following Jerome.
We finally stopped in front of a larger than normal looking hut.
There were quite a few baccas gathered around, intrigued by my looks. Some look scared or angry due to my human characteristics, but others seemed to watch me with questioning eyes, looking at my wings.
My wings unconsciously wrapped around me slightly. All these baccas looking at me was kinda freaky....
The door opened to reveal...a bacca that looked nearly exactly like Jerome but without the whole suit getup.
I, ah, don't know how to describe what all the baccas were wearing. They just weren't naked.
*cough* Author can't think of good clothing to give baccas without making them look bad *cough*
The other bacca looked at Jerome and me for a moment before stepping aside, letting us in. He closed the door, leaving us all alone together.
He watched me warily as we sat in a small circle of chairs.
"So...this is the...person that landed near you?" The bacca, I think Jeremy, asked.
Jerome nodded. "ilbarker is her name. ilbarker, I think you should tell him your story and stuff...."
I nodded and told my "story."
As I told my story, another thought crossed my mind.
Could I...be...ok with Mitch? I mean, he wasn't there, storywise.
I dunno....
After I finished, I watched Jeremy.
He seemed to be thinking. "So...you're basically a human...?"
I could hear the slight distaste in his statement. He seemed to still be skeptical of my whole human thingy.
I shrugged. "I guess...? I'm a different kind of human, though. Most humans can't fly."
Jeremy smirked. "I suppose not. But...why should I trust you? Baby bro here..."
Jerome flinched and glared at Jeremy. "I'm literally younger by 15 seconds, dude...."
The more you know....
Jeremy ignored him. "...has a...thing for humans. Well, basically, he trusts one with his life. How do I know if that human tainted him to what humans do to us?"
Jerome sighed. "Jeremy, I've told you this already. I know what humans do to us! Not all humans are the same! Mitch is----"
Jeremy raised a paw, silencing Jerome. "Mitch this, Mitch that, yeesh, bro.... You sound like you have a thing for him. What, are you gay?"
I stiffened.
Ooooh, he did not just....
You do NOT throw that word around without getting some kind of repercussion.
Jerome was frozen, staring at Jeremy in shock.
Jeremy raised an eyebrow. "Wooow, Jerome.... I mean, I knew your standards were low, but geez...."
I gritted my teeth.
I could feel my anger flaring up in me.
Why. Does ANYONE'S. Sexuality. MATTER.
IT'S ABOUT WHO THEY ARE, NOT HOW THEY IDENTIFY THEMSELVES.
"Jeremy...." I said lowly, trying not to just outright growl at him. "That is no way to treat your brother...."
Jeremy rolled his eyes. "What, are you Mom now? Yeesh, can't I have a little fun?"
Jerome was still just watching us, his face contorted in an emotional mixture of hatred and embarrassment.
"How is it fun. To make someone. ANYONE. Feel ashamed of who they are." I growled.
"What, do you not have siblings? It's just a bit of sibling love...!" He trailed off, noticing the anger in my eyes.
What is this feeling...?
It feels...uncomfortably powerful....
My body was shaking from anger.
Some might think I was overreacting, but these situations....
Uh uh.
But then....
My body...felt...weird....
The last thing I saw before losing consciousness was Jeremy's terrified face and Jerome's look of horror.
And then nothing.
