Hi guys it's edglelord, and I want to talk about something I'm really irritating and needs attention. I think that schools need to cover more important life skills. Okay, where to start.
Overall, the way that schools do teach PSHE subjects really isn't doing students much good. Think about this, for example. When schools teach E-Safety; an important subject nonetheless, is it really a good idea to tell students that everyone about on the internet can't be trusted? Okay, now hear me out. Yes, it's important to make sure children are aware of the dangers of oversharing and making private information public, but the way this is taught just implies that every one on the internet is a pedophile. This, we know isn't true, but the education system still thinks it's okay to use scare tactics to 'keep children safe'.
Now, on a similar spectrum (in the sense they are normally taught as part of the same subject) drugs and alcohol. This is another subject where scare tactics are used to make children listen, albeit a more reasonable subject. I understand that showing the effects of drugs is perfectly reasonable. I think that it could still be taught better, as I recently was made to take an education on the topic and noticed they tried to make it humorous. This is not a subject to be laughed at. This, would be an acceptable use of scare tactics, because the information given is mainly true, unlike the above. However, they chose to make it 'fun' to appeal to children, which was totally lost on me.
On the alcohol side of that spectrum, I don't see the necessity for children to be told that the smallest bit of alcohol will turn you into a drunken monster and you'll lose all your friends etc. What logic goes behind this? Are we the people writing the education requirements drunk themselves? But I digress...
The last topic I'd like to discuss before I suggest some solutions, is mental health. In my school in particular, the mental health 'specialists' have no idea what the signs are. I know of several people who have issues with depression and self harm, but one of them is convinced that Panda_Mimi is depressed. She isn't, don't worry. But they can't tell who is having a rough time and who is just socially awkward. I'm going to leave that there before I get angry.
Additionally, there are so many subjects that we could be teaching that are far more practical than these. Don't get the wrong idea, they're important, But other things are more important. Like:
• Managing finances
• Renting houses
• Buying houses
• Further education
• Loans
• Working lifeSo, what can be done to solve this?
• BE HONEST! If us pupils were taught the right way the in the first place we wouldn't need this rant!
• Teach only what is necessary
• Consider what we need the most as young adults, not children.I think that's all I have to say. Seriously though British government, sort this out.
Jesus Christ this is longer than most of our fanfictions
