There wasn't much anyone knew about Wendy Townsman, except for the things people would say about her. If you were new to our town, you wouldn't know the difference between what was and wasn't the truth.
She wasn't much of a talker to anyone, wore the same three dresses everyday that got shorter and shorter as we grew older. The only thing she ever brought to lunch was an apple and half a slice of bread with peanut butter. Those were as far as the real things about her.
Some used to say she had lice, and that's why her blonde hair was so short. The other rumors were that her mom killed her dad right in front of her when she was two years old, clueless and smaller than the clothes she wore. Another talk was that her brother tried to rape her and her mom killed him too. I heard that was the reason she was so independent and hardly talked.
Because she was afraid.
In 7th grade, she vanished. I remember the day before she did, too. Her faded, pink and floral dress was up to her thighs, and didn't fit her chest anymore, signs of womanhood strong. Her hair had hardly grown past her ears, and she was facing the window, instead of the teacher. I was caught for staring at her, but there was something different about the way her blue eyes glistened in the sunlight, instead of the blank stare she usually sported. I couldn't understand what it was, but I continued to stare, thinking maybe I was paranoid.
But she didn't come back the next day. In time it became a month.
Wendy was gone.
I don't think anyone will ever forget was said about that girl, and neither will I. Sometimes, even though it's been 5 years, I wonder where she went, or if the rumors were true.
I wonder who Wendy really was.
