"Eye contact is a dangerous, dangerous thing. But lovely. Oh, so lovely" -unknown
Bored. Boring. Monotonous. Mundane. The same four words circle around and around my head like flying saucers.
Despite the fact that half of my senior class was at this party, I still felt lonely. I had had the same cup in my hand for over thirty minutes. Whatever liquid inside it was most likely already lukewarm; the heat of bodies that had been dancing too long hung in the air. I could feel myself sweating lightly under my t-shirt.
"Hey man! That hot girl has been staring at you for a million years! Go over there and get fucking laid!" The words got stuck in Jay's throat and came out slurred and just barely understandable.
I awkwardly patted his back and mumbled some kind of reply. He disappeared back into the ever growing crowd. I turned back to look at the girl he had point out before; she had been with a boy. A really cute boy. I just needed to find him and then maybe...I shook my head suddenly.
"Caleb get yourself under control." Great, so know on top of being a homosexual, I was hearing voices in my head. I flinched involuntarily at what the inner Caleb had said. Homosexuality wasn't bad, it just wasn't good for people like me.
Boardale, California was a relatively small city. We had a university, three high schools, a central area and suburbs. We just weren't exactly caught up with the rest of the world. In the real world, everyone was accepting gays and lesbians. Not that people here weren't accepting them; everyone was just putting it in the back of their minds. Besides, no one here was openly gay.
I think the sole reason of that would be because the coach's for the high schools were all homophobic. Boardale was a sports based city. If you didn't play sports, you hardly existed in our little world. There have only been two people I know who came out. Rick Peter, he played basketball for a school a little north of here. Nobody can confirm anything, but rumor has it the coach had his players do a bunch of cruel shit to Rick, until finally he quit. Rick still lives with his mom and dad. Coincidentally, any scholarships he had been offered were revoked. The other person was Alex something or other. He never had been interested in sports as far as I knew, so we mainly left him alone.
I wasn't like Alex; I loved football. The organized chaos of the game. The fact that we could get a group of people together for one sole purpose was amazing to me. I loved it. If I ever told anyone I was gay, I would end up just like Rick.
The thought of having to quit football, of being stuck with my dad the rest of my life urged me to down the rest of the lukewarm beer inside my cup. I jumped up in a sudden act of what probably look like a muscle spasm. Really, I was just trying to distribute the alcohol throughout my body, get it to coat my eyes so everything was fuzzy. Less sharp.
"Excuse me, I just need to get the..uh-I just need that...um, I need that cup behind you." I turned to see the most startling, most gorgeous eyes in all the universe staring back at me.
My heart caught in my throat. Suddenly, I was so nervous. His eyes pierced mine, in one of those stares where you can't help but wonder if they were looking at your eyes or into the very depths of your soul. It lasted only a millisecond; over before it even began. But in that moment, that split second when our eyes met each others, something happened.
I felt light, like if I were to jump into the air I would simply float into the air. Like I had been walking with boulders tied to my feet and they were just now falling off.
"The...uh, the red one." His cheeks turned the slightest shade of pink. It was utterly adorable.
"Yeah sure. I'm uh-Caleb." I stuck my hand out, almost hitting him in the chest. He flinched backwards just a hair, and I wondered if he had been hit before...like me. He took my hand in his, giving it the slightest shake. My stomach flipped.
