Thranduil walked the quiet forest to his favorite pool of water. He was in need of peace and quiet. Rumors of war whispered in his ears everyday; he needed a rest from the troubles of Middle Earth. The glistening pool of Long Lake always soothed him.
It was on the very outreaches of Mirkwood. He would not be bothered by any in this secluded part of the Woodland Realm. Almost no one came this way. He did not fear of any peeping Toms. What need had he to? There was no one about to bother him; his guards didn't suspect his sneaking out. He had left Ilith Gwâth in the stable. All knew he took his Irish Elk with him if he wanted to journey somewhere. He let himself have a small chuckle to his mischievous deed.
Thranduil was in the process of preparing to enter in the waters when he sensed another's presence. He froze scanning the area. If an elleth had spied him leaving they would pay dearly. He would not hurt them but, they may lose their title if they were a noble. If it were another ellon; he would not be as lucky.
Y/N had been frolicking in the woods. She had a song in her heart; she was returning home to Mirkwood. She had been on a scouting trip of six months as ordered by her king. Thranduil was her friend. He trusted her immensely. She had become his greatest spy and scout. He had also sent her away, knowing the heart break she would feel as his mother brought a high elf to court him. He couldn't bear her devastated looks as one elleth after another came and went.
It was to appease the worrying Queen. She wanted her son to be happy. Marriage surely would do the trick. She brought women from all the Elven kingdoms to impress her son. Each time he politely rejected them. Thranduil danced through the ritual for two weeks before apologising to the fair maiden. If they had a lover it was easier than normal. He preferred this to breaking the fragile hearts of the young elleths.
Y/N hummed as she skipped the well trodden paths of the woods. She rounded the bend, as the trees neared the pool, walking in on her king. She knew the silver hair of the royals anywhere. She gave a soft gasp; intending to leave Thranduil in peace. No one need know of their embarrassment. She covered her mouth making to leave take. She had not stepped backwards before a commanding voice spoke.
"I know you're there. Show yourself and tell me why you would intrude upon my serenity."
"Forgive me my Lord, had I known you were here, I would have taken a different route." Y/N spoke hiding her eyes.
"Y/N?"
"I will leave you now." Y/N turned to leave.
"No, I am sorry, I should not have been quite so stern. Forgive me mellon nîn."
"Thranduil, you are completely disrobed; it is right for you to impose upon an intruder. You are King of the Woodland Realm. I would expect no less."
"I should have sensed it was you."
"I have been away these past six months; how were you to know it was I?"
"Are you turned around on me?"
"Why would I face toward you?"
"You have seen me without a tunic or kaftan."
"But never fully naked. What would the rest of your court say? What would your naneth say?"
"My mother has crossed to the Grey Shores, Y/N."
"I am terribly sorry! Was she there for any proposal or marriage?"
"No, there has not been one as of yet."
"But Telêna surely was the one! You had known each other for some time. Why not-"
"Not for all the hundreds of years I have known you."
"Your mother would not approve. She disagreed upon me ages ago."
"She was worried we would only be the spark of a dying ember. She did not know how deep our emotions ran. She would have approved if she was sure it was not a mere friendship."
"Do you see it as more than friendship?"
"Do you not?"
Silence ensued as the question had taken Y/N aback. She toyed with her h/c tendrils which hung down her back in loose strands replicating the water before her. Her e/c spheres traveled to meet Thranduil's winter blue ones. She had pondered this subject many a night; fearing the answer would not be the same for the both of them. Thranduil's question had answered it at long last.
"You have answered the imaginings of my heart, my King." Y/N responded.
"You love me then?" Thranduil urged on.
"More than life itself."
"It is settled, we will return to the palace together."
Y/N only nodded. She heard water rippling before Thranduil turned towards her. She kept her head down; even when she had heard him sit in the grass, to converse. She thought to wait a distance until the ellon was decent again. She would not embarrass him further. It would be shameful.
"Well?" Thranduil inquired.
"Well what?" Y/N asked
"Are you coming in?"
Y/N's head shot up! She saw Thranduil half way in the water looking back at her expectantly. She trembled at the gesture. With a final sigh Y/N nodded smiling.
Thranduil turned giving her some privacy. It wasn't until Y/N entered the water he let himself gaze upon her. He reached his hand out to lead her deeper into the cool silver liquid. She took it gratefully. The couple waded deeper until Long Lake almost covered them.
"When we marry you will be mine. For now stay with me melleth nîn." Thranduil cooed softly.
"I would not want to be cherished by any other." Y/N answered.
"Naneth would be proud."
"She still is. She could never be disappointed in you melleth."
Thranduil kissed Y/N softly caressing her cheek. She reached for his neck; whisking away any stray locks. They chuckled as they parted. A dream had come to life for the lovers.
After bathing the couple exited Long Lake. They walked back to Mirkwood in bliss. Life was becoming complete for the Elven King and his fair maiden. The kingdom would have a King and Queen to rule them in perfect harmony. They could not have planned it out better if Varda had written it in the stars.
