The Giver Epilogue
Jonas still having enough strength, uprights himself and walks a few more steps to find out he was in a town. A town-full of people! He could see through the blinding snow that an elderly man was walking out of his dwelling with a bag of trash which he then put into a container.
“Help” Jonas yells yet it sounded like a whisper.
“Help!” Jonas screamed once again.
The man looking around in bewilderment than spots Jonas and Gabriel. He runs towards them picking both of them up. That is when Jonas then realizes that this man reminded him of the Giver, his eyes, his touch, his face. All seemed to match except the facial hair. The Giver’s facial hair was grown out, but this man had a clean shave.
As the man carries Jonas and Gabriel into his dwelling, Jonas half conscious feels a source of heat and a bed under him. He recalls a fireplace being the source of heat which he then remembers from a memory the Giver had given him about Christmas. It all seemed to match from the memory, the tree with lights, the presents, the fireplace, and the snow outside. Taking in everything Jonas instantly sleeps due to exhaustion and within the last second, he remembers Gabriel.
Jonas wakes up from a nightmare panting and sweaty. He dreamt about the planes Jonas and Gabriel were hiding from had caught them and returned them to the community. He saw Gabriel being released and he being so hurt returns to his family and the Giver still remaining the Receiver. He then found a way to sneak and retrieve a needle with a liquid in it. He saw himself put the needle into his skin and put the liquid into his body. He then laid limp and realizing that he had released himself.
“Slow down there boy.” The man who had saved Gabriel and himself said.
“Who are you?” Jonas then replied.
“My name is Nelson. And who are you?”
“I’m Jonas and the baby I have is Gabriel.” Jonas said then realizing where is Gabriel. “Gabriel! Where is Gabriel?”
“He’s fine; he’s in the other room next door. He just needed food and water and warm clothes.”
“May I see him?” Jonas asked with anticipation.
“Yes, but right after come to the dinner table. I have food and afterwards some shoes and clothes for you.”
“Thank you sir.” Jonas said remembering that is what he called the Giver.
Jonas walked into the room next door to find Gabriel sound asleep and healthy. He looked so comfortable for the first time in awhile and Jonas was happy. He then walked out of the room towards the dinner table to find rolls of bread, chicken, potatoes, and corn, and a plate with utensils. Nelson had then motioned with his hand for Jonas to sit and eat. Gladly, Jonas did and started to pile his plate with food. In the middle of eating Nelson had smiled and looked at Jonas finally breaking the silence.
“So how did you end up in the snow alone with that baby last night?” Nelson had said.
Little did both Nelson and Jonas know that that was the start of Jonas and Gabriel becoming a family. Jonas had told Nelson of his journey and community he had ran from and Nelson had seemed to understand without judgment. It was hard to believe it was that simple but it happened like that. Turns out Nelson had no family and was more than happy to take Jonas and Gabriel in as his own. He raised them, and all were very happy.
