Sailing

Alira's POV

"I'm not afraid!" I whined.

"Then this will be no problem." A fish teased me. My fish friends had dared me to swim up to the surface and yell 'I'm a turtle!' whilst waving my arms like a buffoon. Whatever, it's too late at night for anyone to notice from the shore.

"I'll do it." My eyebrows narrowed in concentration as I swam straight up at a rapid pace, pausing just below the surface of the water. I took a deep breath and bounded through the top. Cold night air stung my face as I scanned the area. No one was around. "I'm a,"

"Who's there?" I heard a male's voice pierce the darkness. I closed my mouth and lowered myself into the water, letting only up to my nose stay in the air. I watched as a figure approached the shoreline. "Are you alright? I heard your voice miss." He wandered, head shaking to keep him alert. I took a breath and took a risk.

"I am." His head spun around, searching for the unknown voice coming from the ocean.

"Where are you?"

"I'm in the ocean."

"What is your name? Do you need my help?"

"Alira." I sunk below the surface. I let loose too much information to this stranger.

The next morning I ventured to the surface to see if there were any new objects askew in the shallow sand. Surely no one would be up this early; I could take my time collecting items. I swam quietly around until I saw something shine. I reached for it, coming back with a small locket on a golden chain. I wrapped it around my neck smiling. I pulled myself to sit in the sand, the end of my tail dipping gracefully into the sparkling ocean. I leaned my head back and closed my eyes, letting myself enjoy the moment of peace.

"What are you?" I froze, eyes popping open. I gazed up at the man, taking in every detail. He wore tattered clothing, a ripped black shirt, exposing his muscular body, and striped board shorts with black boots. I was speechless. A pirate! I tried to push myself into the water before he could touch me.

"Let me go!" I screamed as he gripped my arm gently.

"I won't hurt you." His voice eased in tone.

"Pirates kill my kind, now let me go!"

"Tell me your name."

"You already know it." I said, lowering my head to look down at the sand. I was done for. I could see his other arm rise above his head, I braced for impact. I flinched as he offered his hand to me. I just looked at it as though it was a foreign object.

"Well hey there miss Alira, I'm Asher; and for the record I don't hunt mermaids."

"What...What do you mean?"

"I write about them." I was confused.

"A pirate who writes about mermaids?" I couldn't help but smirk.

"So sue me." He winked and kissed my hand, causing me to blush.

Could this be real? A pirate and a mermaid living happily ever after? Hell yea I'm up for the challenge, bring it on!
