Chapter One - Kidnapped

Kelly Mitchells stood at the doorstep of her Aunt Veronica's house. She had dreaded this very moment all year. Spending her summer here. It was more a mansion rather than a house but Kelly had learned to keep her opinion to herself. There were cracks starting to form on the small concrete rectangle step beneath her feet. The door itself was huge, much higher than Kelly. It was made of polished wood and had some kind of black copper around the edge of it. There was some swirling engravings in it. The front yard was beautiful. Large hedges and roses, all well trimmed, but there was something about this house that made the hairs on the back of her neck stand. She couldn't quite put her finger on it.

Hesitantly, Kelly pressed her index finger onto the white button on the right hand side of the door. She could hear the ring echo through the mansion. The huge door creaked open and a face peered down at her. Aunt Veronica wasn't a very tall woman, but she was as thin as a stick and had eyes of ice, which only made her seem all the more tall; all the more frightening. She was wearing a long dressing gown and had a thick, green coloured substance, smeared all over her face. Hair rollers tightly done, stretching the sides of her face making her look even more stern if possible.

Aunt Veronica's icy glare stared at Kelly analysing every thing she wore disapprovingly. Kelly wasn't exactly the 'girly-girl-princess' type girl as some might say. Her light brown untamed hair was pulled back into a loose bun with strands falling down all over her face. She was wearing baggy jeans and her favourite light blue hoodie which was too big for her. It belonged to her father who had given it to her before the accident.

Kelly's father (aunt veronica's adopted younger brother for whom she didn't really care a lot for) was an experimental physicist. About a month ago, he was testing cyanide in the lab and something went wrong. The whole lab exploded. 6 scientists died that day. Including Kelly's father. It was all over the newspapers and the tv. Kelly had kept the hoodie, the last thing that Kelly's father had given her.

"Uh hi. Aunt Veronica?" Kelly asked hesitantly.

"Ah yes. Kelly. Come in"

The entrance hall of the house was grand. High ceilings and a huge chandelier hung precariously above them. There were paintings of portraits that Kelly didn't recognise and landscapes that she couldn't quite place. She pulled her small suitcase in and Aunt Veronica led her to her room.

Kelly's room was much the same as the rest of Aunt Veronica's house. Large, grand and elegant. In it was an elegant gold-rimmed white vanity, a white closet that reached from floor to ceiling, another beautiful chandelier hung on the ceiling, and other bedroom accessories. In the middle of the room was a queen sized bed. The gold patterned bed spread was laid perfectly with no crinkles. There were at least 12 pillows on top of it.

Pulling her headphones and iPod out of her pocket, Kelly flung her bags down on the floor. She pushed most of the pillows off the bed and jumped in with a thump.

"The fire was out, but then the phone rang. And all of the heat came back again..." Kelly hummed the tune of 'Boomerang' by Plain White ts. Slowly she drifted into a deep sleep.

Kelly woke early in the morning. One of her legs had pins and needles from her sleeping awkwardly. She let out a yawn and sat up, taking the ear buds out of her ears. Her iPod was dead. She hastily plugged it into the charger in the wall and set it aside. Kelly looked at her reflection in the mirror vanity. Her bun had come out and now her hair was a tangled mess. Grabbing a nearby brush on the vanity, she began brushing her hair. There were still a lot of knots but she managed to pull her hair back into a loose ponytail with bits of hair flying up everywhere. She sighed and made her way out to get some breakfast.

Aunt Veronica wasn't up yet so Kelly poured herself a bowl of Kelloggs Crunchy nut and some milk. Looking out the window, the sun was shining and the sky was clear. She decided to go for a run to clear her head.

Pulling on her only pair of runners, Kelly jogged out of the house. She knew the neighbourhood quite well. Every summer break, Kelly would come out to Agoura Hills for a couple weeks to visit her Aunt Veronica when her mother was working late night shifts at work. It was a nice neighbourhood and she new most of the kids there quite well, like the 6 year old twins that lived next door. Everyone was scared of her Aunt Veronica. Everyone knew of her expectations and stubbornness. This is why everyone did their best to avoid her.

Kelly made her way down to the park on Elm street. The street was quiet. No cars coming down. The normally packed playground was completely empty. A chilly wind blew and the trees rustled argumentatively. Kelly shivered and began to walk a little more slowly.

Abruptly, the ear piercing sound of screeching tires echoed through the empty street. Kelly jumped and spun around. A black SUV came speeding down at a lightning pace heading straight for her. Her eyes widened. Instinctively, she turned and started running away from it. She forced her legs to go faster and faster, ignoring the throbbing pain in her thighs.

Her stomach dropped as she saw the dead end. She had taken some wrong turns to try and throw off the driver. She looked both to her left and right. Walls.

"Think Kelly. Think!" She muttered to herself.

Kelly turned just fast enough to see the SUV racing towards her. A dark figure leaned out of the passenger side window with a gun aimed at her, and fired.
