Chapter 2 - Questions

Waking up in a strange place filled with strange people isn't your ideal situation.

Kelly squinted under the bright light flowing through the nearby window. Yawning, she rubbed her eyes and sat up. She had to blink a couple times to get all of the sleep out of her eyes before looking around the room. She was in some kind of small cabin. She had been sleeping on a small single bed with a rough doona. As soon as she got up, her eyes widened to the sight of 3 people in her room, none of which she recognised. She backed away to the other side of the bed and bumped the back of her head on the wall behind. She flinched and rubbed the back of her head. It hurt.

"Oh hello Kelly! Yeah, sleep darts do that." one of the people in the room said. She was young. Maybe 3 or 4 years older than Kelly herself. She had blonde hair and dark eyes. Her lips held a worried smile. Kelly swore she had seen a smirk but it had disappeared just as quickly as it had appeared so she probably just imagined it.

"Who are you? Sleep darts?" Kelly demanded, her voice quivering in fright.

"My name is Andrea, and yes sleep darts. They make you want to go nighty-night very quickly." the girl said slowly as if she was talking to a three year old.

"You do not need to know my name." said the man "you may call me Jack." The man was wearing a grey suit and shades which made it hard to see and distinguishing features. He had a few wrinkles so Kelly guessed that he was late thirties, early forties. His voice was loud, deep and emotionless. He had no smile on his face, and no visable personality traits. Kelly already disliked him.

The last person introduced himself as Nick. He had blonde hair which was slicked black and deep blue eyes. He had broad shoulders and was obviously well built, muscles pulsing out of his black suit. His smile was gorgeous and would have won Kelly over any day but not today. She was scared, confused and alone.

"What's going on?" Kelly asked shakily.

Jack's look softened ever so slightly, then returned to its usual hard glare.

"I have business else were to attend to. Agent 46, 27, fill our newest recruit in on our current situation." and with that 'Jack' left the room, closing the door behind him.

Agent 46? 27? newest recruit? Kelly's head was swarming with questions that had to be answered. Andrea came and sat next to Kelly in one swift graceful movement. Nick remained standing up, leaning against the wall opposite us with his arms crossed across his chest.

"Don't mind Jack. He's a little... serious. There's been a rumour going around that his real name is Barney!" Andrea joked "Look. I know that you're a little frightened at the moment. I felt the same way when I first joined."

"Joined what?"

"Triple X. We are just like your everyday spy academy! Everything you read in books, see in movies, its all here. We've got everything. the gadgets, the training facilities, the awesome spy clothes, and best of all, the enemies."  Andrea said expressively, adding an extra smile at the very end.

Kelly took some time to process this. She was in a spy academy. called triple X. It was impossible.

"why am I here?"

Andrea's smile disappeared. Even Nick pulled up a chair and sat next to us, his elbows resting on his knees.

"A month ago your father was in a lab accident. He was testing how cyanide reacts to batrachotoxin, when in a carbon sink." Andrea explained.

Kelly's mouth dried as the accident which caused her father's death was brought up. Tears threatened to burst out any second.

Andrea took a deep breath and continued. "He discovered a chemical that fights batrachotoxin and he proved that it can cure it. This solution could change the world! Save thousands of lives and put an end to the death toll for poisonous frogs. If he had published his papers and signed it off, your father would have been legendary. Made headline newspapers, been on talk show and the news, be interviewed by reporters all across the planet, and claimed awards. He would have been the scientist of the century."

A lump formed in Kelly's throat. All of this his father would have gotten. She searched her mind for every bit of information that she could remember about batrachotoxin. It was the world's deadliest chemical. It's found in some species of frog like the poison dart frog. There was currently no antidote for it. Was it possible that her father had discovered it? But... but he passed. A year ago. A tear slid down Kelly's cheek.

"He's dead." She snapped frustrated. Why was Andrea telling her all of this?

"No. No he isn't"
