"Pizza?!" Terra, my little sister asked loudly as I sorted through the remnants of what was left in out fridge. I felt my heart sink when I only saw half a carton of milk, three eggs, and a half eaten salad.
I had forgotten to go grocery shopping since she was gone. She had been been on a weekend field trip with her school for two days, and I had totally spaced on needing to buy more food.
"Pizza." I sighed in agreement, closing the fridge door, turning to face her. I couldn't help but chuckle at the grin that broke out across her childish face at one word.
"Go clean up, I'll order the pizza."
"Pepperoni and pineapple, right?!" She grinned at me, jumping down from her stool. For a nine year old, she still acted so much younger when the simple word pizza was mentioned.
"Of course." I smiled, grabbing my phone off of the counter. She loved pineapple on her pizza for some odd reason. I, on the other hand, couldn't stand it. But for her I would do anything, even if that meant eating fruit on pizza.
I dialed the number and quickly ordered the pizza. Terra came out a few minutes later, dressed in a set of clean pajamas. She flopped herself down onto our beat up, brown, couch before grabbing the remote. Our TV was ancient, and sometimes we even had trouble getting the thing to stay on but it was better than empty air.
After hearing a knock on the door, I promptly grabbed fifteen dollars out of my wallet and headed towards the entrance.
I swung it open, and was shocked when I was not met with the pizza man, but instead the woman from earlier that stood by the door of the Rossi house. Even standing in a different environment, one where I should have the upper hand, she still made me feel quite uneasy.
"Um-" I paused, staring blankly at the woman in front of me, "Can I help you?" My voice was weaker than I wanted, making my cheeks heat up at how useless I sounded.
Toughen up, Rosalie!
"I'm here on behalf of Mr. Rossi, he wanted me to deliver this to you." She stated, her voice professional but her expression was anything but that.
Her expression was one of disgust and annoyance. I could just tell that she was bothered that she had to go out of her way.
I finally looked down at what she was shoving in my direction, it was a brand new iPhone 7 in its box. My eyes widened at the sight of this, I began shaking my head vigorously.
"Oh, no." I stated, backing away from the item as if it would explode, "I cannot accept this, please tell him that."
"It's for work purposes only." Her eyes sent daggers through me, "If you really don't want it, you can tell him yourself." She shoved the box against my stomach. I snatched it away from her, easing the pain that the corners of the box were causing as they dug into my skin.
I shoved the box back into her direction, "Please," I began, "I don't even know how to use it. Just return it to him, please."
"Google it." She said in a bored tone before turning on her heel and stalking away from me.
My hand felt heavy with the box occupying it. It was such an expensive device, nothing that I could afford. I closed the door, looking around my dingy apartment and back to the box. It didn't even fit in.
My small kitchen contained a stove, sink and some cabinets. The kitchen table was partially on the tile of the kitchen and the stained carpet of the living room, there wasn't enough space in either room for the whole thing. The stained, tattered, brown couch sat with small Terra curled up on it, already dozing off. The TV crackled every time a character on Finding Nemo spoke, the picture faded since the TV was probably older than me.
I was not someone who could afford something like this.
"Rosalie?" Terra's small voice broke me out of my train of thought. My gaze snapped over to her resting figure, she covered her mouth as she let out a yawn.
"Was that the pizza?" She asked sleepily. I sighed at the sight of her, she was still worn out from the field trip they'd taken to the city.
"Not yet." I sent a small smile in her direction, plopping down at the end of the couch, letting her take up most of it.
I stared intently at the box on my lap, not daring to open it. If I open it then I might want to keep it, and I can't. My blackberry is efficient enough for me, and that's all that mattered. I'd just have to bring the phone to him tomorrow and tell him that I kindly reject his offer.
The thought of meeting him in general was a thought that sent my anxiety into a frenzy, but the thought of meeting him to return something he had given to me made it even worse. I didn't know much about this man, but I had a funny feeling he wasn't the kind of man that took rejection lightly.
I thought back to this afternoon, his towering stance over me. He was so incredibly tall, but that could also be because I only stood at a whole whopping five foot four. I remember the way his gaze was cold enough to turn me into ice, and his green eyes pierced through my whole body. He was something straight out of fairytales, no way a man as gorgeous as himself was actually real.
I was just still trying to figure out if he is the villain or the hero.
