Baby, I'm dancing in the dark, with you between my arms.
Barefoot on the grass, listening to our favorite song.
When I saw you in that dress, looking so beautiful,
I don't deserve this, darling, you look perfect tonight.
-
"I can't believe this," Mitch muttered, rolling his head to the side to rest it on my shoulder. I didn't even need to look at the boy to know that his smile was as wide as it could've been. Then again, I knew mine was too.
As the song continued on, Kirstin seemingly copied Mitch's actions by setting her head on Jeremy's chest. It was such a sweet moment, that I almost felt guilty for intruding on. I glanced around the ballroom and could tell that I wasn't the only one that was thinking that way.
I leaned back in my chair then and set my arm on the back of the chair to my left. I stared at the couple for a little bit longer before finally voicing something that had been on my mind for a while now.
"Can you believe that just a year and a half ago we were just sitting there, heads up our asses, when--"
"I need to cut you off there," I quickly turned to look at the boy. "I most certainly did not have my head up my ass."
"We both kinda did..." Mitch narrowed his eyes.
"I'm gonna pretend that you didn't say that. Now continue?"
"In the past year and a half, Kirstin got engaged and we finally got together. It just feels crazy how fast that time has gone past."
"That really did go by fast," the brunette said, realization heavy in his voice. "It seems like just yesterday we were freaking out over her getting engaged.
"And now, here we are."
"Here we are."
"Can't wait to dance with you," I muttered, causing him to raise an eyebrow.
"You sound awfully confident in your abilities." I chuckled, then shook my head.
"I don't think it would really matter what happens to us in the future. You'd probably just marry me out of pity"
"What?" Suddenly, the song playing transitioned into a much more upbeat one. People cheered loudly, then all seemed to be heading onto the dance floor. I couldn't decide if that was perfectly timed or if it couldn't have come at a worse time.
"Well if we didn't get together--"
"That's not what I'm asking. Why on Earth would I marry you out of pity?"
"Because I don't deserve you."
"You can't... you can't really think that."
"But I don't."
"Scott..." He trailed off, most likely because he was unsure of what to say. I wasn't sure why I had let that slip out either, but it was far too late to take that back. He had a look on his face that was nearly impossible to place. The silence droned on after it was made obvious that neither one of us knew what to say.
"Hey, you two doing okay?" We both turned away from each other to look at Kirstin, who at some point had walked over to us. I opened my mouth to speak, but I had no clue what to say to her either.
"Yeah, we're great," Mitch spoke. "Besides the fact that we're still swooning over your dress," he added on with a smile. That simple sentence cause Kirstin to glance down as well, then run her hands over the fabric. Suddenly, she looked lifted her head to look at us.
"I want my dance with you later. Both of you."
"Of course." She smiled once again before turning to walk towards a new group of people. I continued to watch her, but I could sense that Mitch had turned his attention back to me. I sighed quietly, before looking back to the boy. He had the same look on his face as before, but it still didn't make much sense to me.
"I'm sorry, Mitch. I--"
"I don't understand," he cut me off. "Why do you think you don't deserve me?"
"You're perfect. You could have anyone in the world. Anyone you could ever want."
"But I chose you." Mitch reached up and placed one of his hands on the side of my face. He gently rubbed his thumb on my cheek. "You're the only one I want." He paused for a second before leaning in and firmly pressed our lips together. Just for the few seconds they were together I could tell there was so much meaning behind the kiss. However, he pulled away before I could even attempt to sort through it all.
"You are so many things, Scott Hoying. You're an amazing singer, you're absolutely gorgeous, you're so incredibly passionate, and you have the biggest heart of anyone I know. And you're so many more things that I don't have nearly enough time to say. But undeserving of me is not one of them."
"Stop," I muttered, feeling a blush rise and tears start in the corners of my eyes. He leaned and pecked my lips once again.
"I love you so much. Don't you ever think otherwise."
"For a second there I thought you were gonna propose." Mitch simply smirked at that remark.
"Speaking of..." He trailed off, looking down at his lap. After a moments pause, he glanced back up at me. "The next wedding we go to will be our own, right?"
And just like earlier, I forgot anything else I was going to try to say. And once again, Kirstin managed to divert our attention. I barely heard Mitch's name being called over all of the noise, but when we turned to look at her, she was smiling and waving him over. He got up without much hesitation, and I knew I'd have to join them fairly soon. Only when he was gone could I utter anything.
"God, I hope so."
