It was the middle of January and the city was being blasted with its second snow storm in three days. Hospital ER’s were flooded with patients from falls and car accidents from the ice, and it was only the morning rush hour. The ER of Toronto General was one of those Hospitals. Nurses were running around and performing triage when two teenage boys, twins, and of Japanese ethnicity walked in and up to the triage desk.
“Yes?” asked a nurse as she came up on the other side of the glass.
“We need to see Twilan Burks” one of them said.
“We’ll your gonna have to wait till things calm down,” the nurse replied back as another nurse came by and handed her a file.
The twin that spoke nodded and both of them took a seat by the vending machines, while the nurse rushed off back to work.
Hours later, around 4, when the nurse from the morning was getting ready to leave, she stopped in her tracks and starred at the twins, sitting in the same exact place as this morning. She turned and took the elevator to the basement and walked into the lab, not believing she forgot about the two boys. Entering, she looked around, and when she spotted a young woman with brown hair with bangs, and hazel eyes getting ready to leave, she walked up to her.
“Twilan.”
“Ya, whats up Amy,” Twilan asked, looking up from her bag.
“There’s these two boys in the ER, and they want to talk to you.”
“Who are they?”
“Don’t know, but they knew you by name.”
“Okay, lets go,” Twilan said grabbing her coat.
Twilan and Amy left the lab and headed up to the ER. When they got off the elevator, Amy pointed the boys out to her, and Twilan raked her brain trying to figure out how they knew her.
“Boys,” Amy called out, and when they looked up she waved them over.
“Twilan Burks,” Amy said, pointing at Twilan.
“Mom?” one of them said.
Twilan looked at them in shock then passed out. Amy called for an orderly and they put her on a gurney, while the twins both watched with shock.
“Ahhh, ok, wait here for a minute,” Amy said as she ran off.
The boys watched her run off and they looked at each other.
“You made haha faint Kenji,” the one boy said.
“Shut up Akira, this was your idea,” the one know known as Kenji said.
Akira went to say something back, but before he could Amy came back with an African American lady.
“Boys, come with me,” the African American lady said, as she led the boys into an exam room.
Amy turned back to Twilan and lightly slapped her face to wake her up, which worked as Twilan slowly opened her eyes.
“Amy? I had the weirdest dream. I dreamt I had kids I didn’t know about,” Twilan said slowly sitting up.
“It wasn’t a dream,” Amy told her.
“I got Bernice talking to them,” Amy added.
“Oh my god, how did this happen?” Twilan panicked, hold her head in her hands.
“It’s kinda funny. It’s like a reverse baby daddy drama,” Amy laughed as Twilan glared up at her
“This is serious!” Twilan snapped
“I agree,” Bernice said as she came out of the room.
“What did they say?” Twilan sked as she stood up.
“Akira and Kenji Kato truly believe you’re their mother,” Bernice said.
“That’s impossible. I would remember giving birth to twins.”
“They said their father used frozen eggs that were for sale.
“That doesn’t make sense. Why would I sell my eggs?”
“Did you freeze your eggs? Amy asked
“Ya, but it was with a certified company,” Twilan said as she looked at both Amy and Bernice.
“I’ll look into for you, besides, where did they come from?” Amy asked.
“Japan.” Bernice said.
“Japan!” Twilan shouted back.
“I’ll go see if I can get in contact with the father,” Amy said she walked away.
“What am I going to do Bernice,” Twilan asked.
“Take them home with you till their father comes to get them,” Bernice replied before she walked away.
Twilan stood in the middle of the hallway as she tried to come to terms with what just happened.
“Mom?” One of the twins asked as they booth stood in the door way.
“Yes Kenji,” Twilan said.
“I’m Akira, that’s Kenji,” Akira said, pointing to his brother.
“Right right, sorry. What do you need?”
“What’s gonna happen now?” Akira asked.
“Well the both of you are gonna stay with me till your father comes,” Twilan said as Amy came back.
“I left a message for the dad, just a waiting game now. Good luck,” Amy said as she left.
“Well, get your stuff, and lets go.” Twilan said as Kenji and Akira followed her out of the Hospital.
It was a quite commute home, and once they got home, Twilan told the boys they could sleep in her room and she would sleep on the couch. She told them to unpack what they brought with them while she made something for them to eat.
