Dear Diary,
I cannot even remember the days or months now. Food is scarce. Fear is plentiful. The German soldiers could come at any time and find us, the last survivors of their town. They could immediately kill us, or make us slaves. These are my worries.
I feel that I cannot protect my little ones; a mother's greatest fear. They are my life, Jim, Sam, and Sara. They are my food when I don't get any, they are my fuel to start another day, they are the sun and moon in my sky.
I am writing this in daylight, having found another pencil in these ruins of our beautiful city. It's hard to believe that the town once thrived.
As my children stir, I think of my husband. My sweet Joseph. He said to me once, "Hatred makes one want to hurl, which is why we must love." At the time, I had laughed so hard, but that was before the war. I used to feel hatred at the Germans, but I realize they did me a debt. They kept my sweet Joseph alive. He died on his own, not of their accord. Of this I can thank them for.
The Germans were so afraid of an overpopulated land, instead of destroying their own people, they destroyed the United States of America. They practically wanted just the land and resources. For all I know, this is one of the only places that they have not populated with Germans.
I watch my daughter wake up....I need to write tomorrow.
