The fire advanced upon her village. The cries of men, women, and children echoed throughout the night. The woman clutched her baby. Trying to calm down the newborn. She watched as her home crumbled to the ground taking the village and everybody down with it. The woman ran down the dirt
road running from the flames. Her feet blistering and raw. She clutched the child to her chest, muffling the child's cries. She had to keep this child safe. She had promised Maria she would. There was nothing lady for her at the village. No life, no family, no home. The fire had taken everything. All at the expense of a baby. She knew not of the child's importance. Only of her promise. She ran for her life; she ran until the village was no more until the green of the forest engulfed her. As night fell the howls of wolves echoed throughout the forest. The woman felt sleep invading her mind. As black spots appeared in front of her vision. She slowed her pace slumping against a tree. As she let exhaustion and fatigue take over her. The last she heard was the soft snores of the baby in her arms.
