"No girls," Splash shook his head. He was back in human form. A dark-skinned man with black-and-green hair and a thicker, muscular frame. There were two white streaks on his sideburns like when he was a wolf, and his golden eyes were the same. "I've known Thorn for nearly my whole life. He would never try and overthrow me."
"But you can ask Coal and Flint-"
"Coal and Flint are pups. They speak gibberish.," the alpha dismissed us sternly as he adjusted a pair of sunglasses that hid his inhuman eyes. "Now I have to go, you two. Job opening."
I groaned, I found it strange that most lycanthropes had human jobs on the side of their wild lives. Splash Lyall -or Sean Lyall, as he was called outside of the therian world- had recently lost his job due to missing numerous days after a pup went missing and was found barely alive and nearly frozen in the lake. Now the alpha was going to try and become a teacher so that he could have summers off. But why we needed money? I found the concept strange, considering that the only things that people and lycanthrope alike need to survive, are a few pairs of shirts, pants and some meat to ration in the colder seasons. Thorn found this idea silly as well, with him being raised in the wild like I was. But unlike him, I had been homeschooled by Splash and had a fairly decent education, while the beta had refused to be taught.
"I promise that we're telling you the truth, dad!" Bluebell pleaded, grabbing her father's right arm in a futile attempt to keep the man in the cabin, but he shook her away, sighing.
"Blue, I'm leaving. I can't miss this opening." Splash said before turning away from us and walking outside and closing the door, leaving me and Blue alone in the dark.
"This is bad," she said, her wolf ears were flattened in both annoyance and stress. "Thorn wants to overtake dad's position in camp, and if that happens, what will happen to me?" she looked at me, and then her eyes softened. "What will he do to you?"
I blinked, thinking. I soon came to realize the fact that the only reason I was in this pack, was that the alphas had adopted me. Unapexes were a disgrace to the therian community and Thorn had an incredible disliking to the idea that he would be housing a shiftless lycanthrope. This was probably due to the fact that he was born as a wolf and preferred his canid form to his human form. I decided to change the subject, "Where is everyone?"
Bluebell shrugged. "You know what? I don't really know. I haven't seen them since-"
"Hey girls." called a laid-back human voice from the doorway. Me and Bluebell both froze before turning.
"Hi Thorn." I squeaked, trying to imitate the beta's easygoing posture and tone of voice with no avail.
"Have you seen Felix? Or Mira?" Blue asked him tentatively.
The man shook his paler-skinned head. "No, actually, I'm here because the Coal is missing. You were just with him- do you know where he could be?" His voice was smooth and responsible but he spoke in a way that made me not trust a word he said.
"But I sent the pups off to their mom around a half and hour ago." Bluebell scowled in thought.
I nodded. "Yeah, I was with her. Are you sure they aren't hiding in the den again?"
"Ginger checked, they've disappeared." Thorn shook his head. "I'm here to help you two look. Sophie can come with me. Blue can search around the cabin."
I nodded, though the palms of my hands had begun to sweat out of anxiety and fear. "Sure. They probably went to the lake. All pups like to go there." I told the mutinous beta. He didn't nod, but the calm, confident look he had worn only a few seconds before had transformed into a sort of wary, scared expression.
