Evan's POV
"I'm twenty-four. A little bit of an age difference." She nodded and shrugged. Out of nowhere, my phone started playing A Year Without Rain by Selena Gomez.. She started giggling, turning into full on laughter once she saw my cheeks heating up. "Devon, I am going to hurt you!," I grumbled. I slid of the stool and quickly answered it.
The Sheriff, Dave Fox, was explaining to me that he needed me to come down, but wouldn't tell me why. I sighed, "And why can't Geoff do it?"
"Because he's already gone home to spend time with his family."
I sighed once again. "Okay, fine"
"You know I would've called someone else if I could've, but you're the only one I trust enough."
"Yes, I know....you really owe me big time"
He chuckles. "Don't I always? Just hurry up and get here."
"Alright. See you soon."
"I've gotta go," I told Nevaeh while I hung up and headed towards the door.
"Okay. I'll see you out." It seemed like she was disappointed with something. Maybe that I have to leave? Nah, I'm just hearing things. We reached the door and she opened it, leaning on it with her hand on the handle. "Oh, and thanks for helping us move everything inside, I appreciate it. We'd probably still be moving stuff if we didn't have the extra help."
I flashed her my charming smile that always got the ladies. "No problem, I'm here to help with...whatever you need." I winked and walked out, heading the short way to my house, all the while cursing myself for doing that. Why do I always have to say something stupid? I could feel her watching me. "Why don't you just take a picture, it'll last longer?" I called over my shoulder, knowing it'd make her blush.
Instead of going to my room and taking a nice, hot shower like I wanted to, I headed over to my car. It was a black 2014 Camaro ZL1 just like Bumblebee from Transformers. The only difference is that my car is black and red instead of yellow and black....oh, and my car isn't a Transformer.
While I drove to the station, my mind went back to wondering why Dave called me down when there are always multiple people qualified enough to help him with cases. As I stopped in my parking spot at the station, I spotted him standing at the top of the stairs, making me wonder why this was such an urgent matter. I got out, going slower than usual as payback for him calling me in.
"Hurry up Stephenson, I'm growing old up here!" I laughed at that one. Sheriff Fox had to be at least in his late fifties, with his mostly grey hair due to being on the force for so many years.
Once I reached him, I noticed he had some manila folders in his hands. There's no way this case is a usual one. I found out for sure when he started explaining the situation to me. Basically, I needed to protect some girl, which was one of his friend's daughters, but I wouldn't know any of the details until I read the files later on. He was adamant on not telling me, saying everything I needed to know was going to be in the two thick files.
When I got home, I threw the files on my coffee table and went to my room to finally have my shower. I lost track of time, loving the relaxation a hot shower always brought me. I had only realized how long I'd been in when I noticed my pruney fingers. I stepped out, wrapping a towel around my waist.
Walking into my room, I noticed the shades on my window were still open and I could see right into Nevaeh's room. She was standing in front of her window doing God knows what, then took her shirt off to reveal her white tank top and flat stomach. Damn, I need to get dressed and go to bed before I have to take another shower, I thought. I berated myself now for spying on her, although I wouldn't call it that, and went to put on some briefs and basketball shorts. I brushed my teeth, then plopped on my bed, instantly falling asleep. I was ready for the oncoming busy day tomorrow. Little did I know...things were going to get really hectic in the days to come.
