Year: Fifth
Class: Defense Against the Dark Arts"Alright class, take your seats!"
The command was not required; most of the class was already seated, and those who weren't were finding their ways.
"Did ya hear 'bout the special guest?" Fiddleford asked Bella and Ford as they took seats near the front. "'Parently, she's-"
"Now class, as I'm sure you've all probably heard by now, we have a very special guest with us today," the witch teaching the class announced. "Please welcome Ms. Claire Paris."
Heads turned as an extremely beautiful woman walked between the desks up to the front towards the teacher. Half the class- mostly the male half- stared at her as though transfixed, although Stanford noticed three or four boys besides himself that seemed unaffected the way the others did. Most of the girls in class seemed unaffected as well; indeed, some were glaring slightly at the woman and glancing at their boyfriends.
"Woooooow," Bella breathed, giggling slightly, "she's pretty."
"Ain't she?" Fiddleford agreed. Ford frowned slightly.
"Now, does anyone know what Ms. Paris here is?" The professor asked. Several students raised their hands, and Ford had the distinct impression that some only did so to impress Claire. "Yes, Susan?"
"She's a Veela," The girl answered.
"Correct!" The professor grinned, and a ripple of hushed chatter broke out between the girls. Ford vaguely remembered reading the word 'Veela' somewhere, but he couldn't remember where. "And can anyone tell me what Veelas do? Johnathan?"
"They can charm boys into finding them really attractive and doing anything to impress them, and they're very pretty," the student answered, adding the last part with a hopeful glance towards Claire.
"Precisely!" The witch grinned. Ford slowly raised his hand, and he spotted several other boys do the same. "Stanford, you have a question?"
"Ma'am, I don't really find Ms. Paris... attractive," Ford explained. "Not that you're not pretty, Ms. Paris!" He added hastily. "It's just... I don't feel the way Jonathan described."
The other unaffected boys spoke in agreement, and the witch looked around the room thoughtfully.
"How strange," she mused. "Does anyone know why that might be? Fiddleford?"
"Veela can charm anyone who's attracted to girls," Fiddleford answered, his voice quieter than normal; he seemed almost embarrassed to speak in front of Claire. "So some girls are affected, if'in they're gay or bi, and some boys ain't, if they're gay."
"Exactly," The teacher nodded. Ford chuckled slightly at hearing the explanation. That definitely explained why he and the other few boys didn't seem affected, and also why the few girls that were bi or gay were affected.
Ford took notes for the rest of class, which went over the dangerous aspects of magical creatures that they wouldn't learn in Care of Magical Creatures class. He had to admit, it was amusing watching the other boys in class make fools of themselves just to impress Claire.
"Well that was an interesting class, huh Fidds?" Ford chuckled as they left the room after class.
"You shut yer mouth," Fiddleford grumbled, his face still red from his embarrassing attempt to impress Claire. "You would'a done the same thin' if ya liked girls."
"Maybe, but it was still funny," the younger boy snickered.
"I'm wonderin' why you didn' do anythin' embarrassin' to impress Claire," Fiddleford said to Bella.
"Maybe it has something to do with me being demi," Bella mused. "And that I only like girls romantically. The teacher did say most Veela attraction is sexual."
"That could be possible," Fiddleford nodded. Bella gasped suddenly, grinning widely and placing her hands over her mouth.
"I wanna see how Stan reacts to them!"
