John is a prodigy, and as such he was doing some counseling to work on his medical degree while still in his later years. Four years older he's trying to get a rather stubborn first year to even stand on a first story balcony. It's a young eleven year old who just loathes heights. The rest of the students had already been dismissed, but they weren't leaving until John had some measure of success.
"I don't want to get up there!"
"You're not going to fall!"
"I'm not going up there!" The littler boy has started to tear up. Finally, John sighs and offers a hand
"C'mon. I want to show you something." Sherlock gently takes his hand following slowly. John leads him to a hidden overlook of the lake, one pretty high up, similar to a low story height, Sherlock backs away at once.
"No! I can't stand heights!"
"Look. You're smart. You know you can't fall. Just come look with me."
"No. I won't"
"Fine." He just goes and sits on the edge. He waits on the curiosity to bring Sherlock over. Sherlock does come over and stand carefully behind John, peeking around him, and holding onto his thick leather jacket
"I don't like heights. I have a dream where, I'm a man... And I jumped because a criminal told me to or he'd kill my lover."
"I used to have similar dreams, though the opposite. But i found as I grew to love heights, those fears went away. The dreams went away."
"I'm scared if I'm not scared... It'll happen." Sherlock admits, as time goes on eventually he does get the little one on a balcony. Sherlock is now thirteen, and is growing quiet quickly. After he got the younger to climb to the balcony, he and Sherlock have struck up a quiet sort of friendship, so the this new quietude worries John. He was quiet fond of the litte one, and come to find out if he's not quiet, he's insulting someone, or he's getting bullied. So John makes it a point to stick around more, and if hes no nearby, the other rugby players are more then happy to keep an eye on him. They enjoy teasing John about him. His close friend Greg was one of the worst about it. One day his closest companion on the team leans down from the top bunk, it's Greg of course.
"Have you kissed yet?"
"What? Of course not! It's not like that!"
"It's exactly like that."
"It isn't. He's still far too young for anything of that nature. He's innocent compared to most, in that sense."
"He loves you." He looks around to make sure none of the other boys are in there, then admits
"I know. I love him too. Doesn't change anything"
"Tell him. Poor boy is so alone." Greg murmurs, sliding down into the bottom bunk next to John, so they could talk better.
"He'll go into shock. You've met him."
"Not if you ease him into it first. He needs to know."
"And how do you propose I ease him into it? He's a genius, he'll see through anything, but he's still young enough to misinterpret it." John is just trying to give off reasons that he shouldn't tell Sherlock. The age gap is his biggest concern. Greg too seems to pick up on that small issue.
"But you're leaving after this year?"
"Of course I am. We all are Greg. You know, the whole we're graduating thing?"
"But I thought you might keep... doing the counseling." John shakes his head slowly
"I was recruited for medical training two weeks ago. I start the week after graduation" John finishes, and suddenly Greg grins
"I have an idea."
"Oh? Do tell."
