POV: Brendon
That night he watched Ryan fall asleep from across the room. They stayed up talking even after Kala went to bed around 11:30. Brendon just did his best to keep Ryan's mind off of his family. They mainly talked about school, music, and what they want to do after they graduate.
Brendon had told him he planned to make a profession out of something he enjoyed, which was music. Ryan had said he wanted to be a writer.
As he lay there on his side, he thought about his plan to make Ryan happy.
Out of the house? For now.
Now what can he do? Well, that was the hard part. Figuring out what would make Ryan happy is like trying to interpret an unknown language... Talking to him, he couldnt read his emotions very well. The first time he had ever seen him smile was that night during the pillow fight.
Maybe he could just ask him in the morning... he really should get some sleep.

POV: Ryan
"Bren..."
Brendon mumbled in his sleep, rolling over onto his stomach. Ryan moved across the room to the other boy's bed, reaching out to shake him.
"Brendon, wake up." he said, louder than before.
He rolled back to face towards Ryan and half-consciously reached up to him like a child asking to be picked up.
"Brendon just get the hell up-"
He was interrupted by a sleepy Brendon wrapping an arm around his neck and pulling him down beside him. He then nuzzled into his chest, holding him too close. Ryan was about to object, but realized it wouldnt work with Brendon. He just laid there, still trying to get away from Brendon's tight embrace or just to wake him up.
He finally pried his arms away, getting up off the bed and tearing the covers away from Brendon in an attempt to wake him up. Finally the boy blinked his eyes open, looking up at Ryan with a tired smile.
"Morning, honey." He said sleepily, yawning and stretching out his arms.
Ryan ignored the fact that he called him 'honey' again and instead asked, "When did you end up falling asleep last night?"
"Like... i dont know, 2 or 3 am?" He responded, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. "I need coffee."
"Brendon, do you always stay up that late?"
"Well... I guess. I try to sleep but its hard. Do you want some coffee?"
"No..." Ryan realized Brendon was going to avoid the question, so he dropped it.
He followed the other boy into the kitchen where Kala was standing, a cup of coffee in her hands and another on the counter. She picked it up, handing it to her brother as he joined her leaning against the counter. Ryan stood awkwardly across from them leaning on the island.
"Did you sleep last night?" Kala asked, but Brendon stayed silent. She lowered her voice so Ryan wouldnt hear, but it wasnt quiet enough. "Brendon you need to tell mom, its been going on too long."
"How long exactly?"
"Ryan, its not a big deal-"
"But it is," Kala interrupted, "your lack of sleep and dependency on coffee is not healthy."
Ryan looked between them questioningly, and when Brendon noticed his face he moved over to his side and rested his head on the other boy's shoulder. "Guys, i promise im fine. Im not a little kid anymore."
POV: Brendon
Kala sighed, taking her coffee and walking into the living room. The boys soon followed. They went back to the same spot they had been in the day before, with Brendon cuddled up next to Ryan.
"You two are honestly the cutest." Kala commented.
"We're not a couple..." Ryan mumbled.
"I... Never said you were?"
"Saying were cute together is basically implying were a couple."
Kala sighed, rolling her eyes. "Listen, i know youre probably not even gay. But you need to stop acting like a child every time something sounds like it means youre dating. I understand you arent, im just commenting on how you two look together."
Ryan narrowed his eyes at her, but didnt say anything in response. He just shifted in his seat and crossed his arms, leaning away from Brendon. The other boy sat up and slouched in dissapointment.
"See Ryan, now youre making Brendon feel bad."
Brendon looked at his sister with wide eyes. "No hes-" he tried saying.
"Fine." Ryan interrupted, throwing his hands up in fake surrender. "You know what, if im this much of a problem I'll just leave. I never needed friends anyways."
He started towards the door, and Brendon got up to stop him but stopped dead in his tracks when Ryan turned back around to face him.
"I said im leaving. Dont bother trying to fucking stop me."
He slammed the door shut behind him as he left.
Brendon went back to sit down on the couch, resting his head in his hands. Kara silently walked over and sat next to him and rubbed his back in an attempt to comfort him.
"Im sorry..."

POV: Ryan
Ryan stormed out of the house. He wasnt exactly sure how to get home from here, but he figured he could just find his way back to the school and go from there.
As he walked, these phrases repeated in his mind.
'If youre gay, thats the last straw.'
'If youre gay youre not allowed back in this house ever again.'
His fathers words burned in his mind. He wouldnt be able to find another place to live. So he would do everything in his power to not be gay. Ryan hated his father with a burning passion but at least he had a source of food and shelter.
When he finally made it back to his house he noticed that once again his father was working late. Good.
He made his way up to his room... He knew Brendon told him not to do it... But what does Brendon's opinion matter? Listen to one person saying no or ten people saying yes?
Ryan felt bad for fighting. He felt bad for yelling at them. They were just trying to be nice... well at least Brendon was. He should have just sucked it up like he did every day at school.
As he reached into his drawer he thought again about his father. His fist balled up over the small sharp object in his hand, causing skin to break and let blood begin to bead up against it.
Ryan threw the blade back down and laid on his stomach on his bed and he cried. He cried because of what he was doing. He cried because of what he had said to his only friend. He cried because of where his mind was going.
