Chapter 7:

“Lex?” Called out Lauren who was immediately shushed by the boy, or if she dared to say man, she had unfortunately seen the very same morning.

                “Do you ever knock?”

She didn’t bother answering his question but instead narrowed her eyes at Charlie. “Where is she?”

He rolled his eyes at the blonde girl, “She’s sleeping.”

“Is that code for I killed her and I’m using sleeping as an excuse so that you won’t ask for her?”

He ignored her. The minute she started rambling he knew to just tune out. Most of it didn’t make sense and the little that did, he didn’t want to understand. “I’m assuming you know why she’s here.”

“And since you said that…I’m going to assume you don’t.”

                “Lauren,” he growled.

She made a face at him. “Where is Miles?”

He shrugged, “I’m guessing work but he’s not answering my calls.”

She walked around him to get to the fridge, pulling out juice before making her way to get a cup.

“Make yourself at home, why don’t you,” commented Charlie under his breath.

“When did you get here?” She said taking a sip out of her glass.

He shrugged, “About an hour ago.”

She opened her mouth and Charlie already began rolling his eyes, nothing good ever came out of Lauren opening her mouth. “And so you’ve what? Been creeping it on Lexi while she sleeps?”

He felt the need to gag, “She’s my sister!”

“Didn’t stop Toby and Jenna,” she said.

                He groaned, “Dear Lord.”

“Where is she?” Lauren asked peering over in the direction of the couch.

“I carried her to Miles’ bed.”

“Why didn’t you put her in the guest room?” She asked, lifting an eyebrow.

                “There wasn’t sheets.”

Lauren smirked thoughtfully, “No matter the circumstances Lexi always somehow ends up in Miles’ bed.”

“Ew, ew, ew,” Charlie said, putting his hands over his ears for dramatic effect. “I’ve spent my whole life without having to know the nasty details of Miles and Lexi and I have no interest in hearing them now.”

“Fine, fine,” Lauren said carelessly as she leaned back on the counter. “But they’re going to get back together, you know.”

                Charlie scoffed, “Right.”

“I’m serious. It’s only a matter of time.”

Charlie’s eyes softened when he realized that Lauren was completely serious about this, “No it’s not, Laur. Lexi is a felon that has no interest in anyone but herself and Miles’ has showed no interest in getting back together with her.”

Lauren shook her head, when she set her mind to something there was no bother arguing with her. “You don’t understand.”

Charlie’s didn’t. He didn’t understand their pasts nor did he have any interest in understanding it. But that didn’t mean that he didn’t understand that whatever had happened in their past almost guaranteed they would have no future.

“Neither do you,” he told her coldly.

She glared at him but she knew he was right. Whatever Miles and Lexi had or didn’t have couldn’t even be understood by their best friends.

“You know why she’s here don’t you?” She asked, feeling the need to get the last word in at least one conversation.

“I have no idea,” he told her honestly. “I came to pick up Miles for lunch but instead of finding him, I found my delinquent sister. You can only imagine what kind of shocker that was.”

“She came to help me with my wedding,” she told him.

                Charlie coughed, “I’m sorry what?”

She rolled her eyes, “I’m getting married, Charlie.” She told him slowly as if he wouldn’t understand her otherwise.

“But…but,” he racked his brains for the right words and finally settled on, “Who would marry you?”

She narrowed her eyes at him for what seemed like the millionth time just that day, “I don’t know…perhaps my boyfriend?” Her tone was leaning on sarcastic but Miles didn’t have time to process that. This had caught him way too off guard.

He then stared at what he thought must be the only explanation, her stomach.

                Two seconds.

                Three seconds.

                A minute.

“Charlie?” She asked suddenly exasperated. “What are you staring at?”

“My future niece or nephew,” he told her in all seriousness as his gaze still very focused on her stomach.

“What are you-Oh God,” she said, her voice mixed with disbelief and humor. “You think I’m pregnant?”

He looked back up at her, confused, “You’re not?”

She felt the urge to laugh, “No, I’m not.”

“Then why else would Ray marry you?”

She grabbed him by his precious locks and hissed, “What exactly does that mean, Charles Madison?”

“Exactly what it sounded like, Lauren.” He said attempting to swat her hands away from his head.

Someone cleared their throat and both heads swirled towards the direction of the door.

And there Lexi Madison, brown hair and all, stood in all her amused glory.

“Children, children, I thought I told you two to play nice.”
