Odysseus Calls Home

            During my sixth year on Calypso’s Island I met a beautiful traveling goddess name Olivia. She is not a well known goddess. However she is not known as a minor goddess either. Olivia is the goddess of contact for family and friends.

            “What is a beautiful maiden such like yourself doing on a deathly island?” Even though she was beautiful, she was not as beautiful to me as my wife Penelope was. While I was longing to see my wife, I also wanted to see my son and home.

            “Is there something that worries you?” I was debating whether or not to tell her I wanted to see my wife and son, and talk to them. On one hand if I tell her she might make me forget about them like Calypso did. On the other hand if I don’t ask her I might be able to contact my family without knowing it.

            “Yes, I have been on this island for six years. Moreover I have not been home in nineteen years, because of the Trojan War. In addition because some of the main gods were not in my favor.”

            “Would you like to contact them?” I consider saying no, because whenever a god or goddess trys to help you there is always a catch to it. However if I don’t say yes I am unsure if I will get off this island and return alive. At least they will know I am still alive and that I love them and never stop thinking about them.

            “Yes I would like to contact them.” I decide to take the risk. As I waited for her to tell me what to do, she was going in her bag that I did not notice before pulling out a mirror.

            “This is a special mirror. When you want to talk to someone all you have to do is say there name and status to you out loud. However for me to allow you to use it the main gods want you to say on this island for another year. If you do not accept the mirror you will forget all about this meeting and I will be really sad because you would be my first human friend. So do you accept the mirror or not?”

            “Yes I accept the mirror.” I accepted it because I wanted to talk to my family because I do not know if I will live after I get off this island. Plus it’s also nice to have a goddess as a friend even if she is not well known, and I would be the first human to have a goddess as a friend.

            “This is great news. I have to leave now, but if you ever want to talk to me again just call my name in the mirror. However if you lose the mirror before you arrive home, everyone that you have talked to will forget you and you will also forget them.”

            “Yes, Olivia goddess of contact for family and friends. I bid you farewell.” As soon as Olivia left I decide to contact my wife, Penelope. With the mirror in my hand I faced it telling it “Penelope, my wife.” As soon as I said that I saw my wife. She seemed so worried. I called out to her. “Penelope, dear why are you so worried? Is it because I am not there?”

            “Odysseus, is that you? Is my mind playing tricks on me? No, it can’t be I am as sane as the king. Odysseus I am worried because you have not come home in nineteen years. The other reason I am worried is because when you did not come home after the Trojan War with ever one else, many men came to me wanting to be my suitor, using Telemachus inheritance to eat and drink. Your son and I need you to come back as soon as possible to get rid of all these men, and for me to be back in you arms.”

            “I am doing fine my love. I did not come back home with the others because the gods were not in my favor. Although I do know that I will be going home in a year. For now I will leave you, may you have sweet dreams with me in it.”

            Their was more conversations between me, Penelope, and Olivia over six months. One day during the first day of the seventh month I was walking along the beach getting ready to talk to Penelope. As I was about to call to Penelope a vast tide hit me, making me lose the mirror. As I was still looking for the mirror I remember Olivia’s word say that if I lose the mirror the people that I talk to, besides Olivia, and I would forget about the contact between us. As if I was struck by lighting I…….. What am I doing on the beach? I must be trying to swim but it is too windy, maybe another day.
