It was stormy and gray the day Belle encountered her. She was inside the cottage, humming to herself as she swept some dirt into a pile, wanting the house to look somewhat presentable for when Maurice came back, when a knock sounded at the door. Startled, Belle put the broom down and made her way to the door, peeking through the small hole that Maurice had drilled into it so that one could see who was inside, and saw an older woman with white hair and a black cloak around her, shielding her from the cold and rain. Quickly, Belle ushered the woman inside and got a few blankets so that she could warm up as Belle started a fire. She didn't know who the woman was, of course, but she couldn't just turn her away in this storm. When she re-entered the front room, the old woman was gone, replaced with a young woman with beautiful blond hair so light that it made Belle's light brown hair look black. She must have looked scared because the woman was quick to stand and put her hands up, making Belle back up a few steps.
"Do not be afraid," the woman started with a silky voice that made Belle instantly relax. "Thank you for your kindness, Miss."
"O-of course, ma'am, I couldn't just leave you out in the storm. That would be rude..." Belle's voice faded out as the woman took a step forward, making Belle uncomfortable as she pulled on her white apron. The woman smiled and put her hand out, as if wanting to meet Belle formally.
"I am Rosaline. A pleasure to meet you, Belle." She introduced and Belle moved to take her hand, feeling a tingle in her hand. Startled once again, Belle jumped back and looked at Rosaline apprehensively.
"How do you know my name?" Belle demanded softly, pushing her plait back over her shoulder. Rosaline gave a mysterious smile and folded her hands behind her back.
"I know many things, young one. And I have to say, you are much more polite than that prince a few years ago..." Rosaline trailed off as if realizing she shouldn't have said that, and gave Belle an apologetic smile. "Forgive me, but I must be off." Before Belle could so much as protest, the woman was gone in a poof of gold sparkles that disappeared before they touched the ground. Belle frowned and examined the place where the woman had just stood. Certain that she didn't imagine it by the fact that the blankets were there, she made sure the door was firmly locked and tried to get some sleep before Maurice came back from town the next day.
