My father and I arrived at the horse auction around seven am the next morning. The auction did not technically start until eight , but my dad decided to come an hour early to get an overview of the horses available. We walked thru the stall aisles , and my dad had a notepad to mark down each broodmare that he wanted to bid on. Three mares were chesnut ,and they were Dash for Cash and Jetolena bloodlines. Their names were Watchmedovoodoo, Sammys Lightning Bolt and Cashin Magic and they were quarter horses. Two of the mares were black and bay , and their names were Precious Memories and Flying Eagle they were both thoroughbreds . The last five mares were Frenchman and Sun frost bloodlines , and I couldn't remember their names just colors. Two were palomino mares , and the last three were buckskins and duns . Overall my dad seemed to favor the mares Cashin Magic and Watchmedovoodoo.
We then moved on into the young horse stalls, and my dad began talking to the owners of a couple of the training prospects. A loud commotion caught my attention, and I walked down to the other end of the barn. Two guys were holding a beautiful filly , and she was fighting them tooth and nail. She was the most gorgeous animal I had ever seen , and my dream horse. She was a dapple grey with a silver mane and tail with black socks running down her legs. The man on the right hit her swiftly with a whip , causing her to rear. He hit her again , which made me flinch as they forcibly pushed and pulled her into a stall. The mare pinned her ears and ran at the stall door. Both men stood in front of her door laughing and antagonizing her.
I walked close behind them to listen to their conversation, trying to remain unsuspecting that I eavesdropping. " The boss is gonna have a hard time getting rid of this mare." Said the man with the whip. " She has outstanding bloodlines , but she is just to spirited and stubborn to train." The other man nodded in agreement as they walked down the aisle away from the stalls. When they were out of sight I approached the stall door quietly , trying not to alarm the mare. She looked to me ears forward with curiosity as she ate on her hay. " Hey girl ,"I smiled. I raised my hand suddenly and she pinned her ears and bared her teeth. My dads hand dropped on my shoulder , causing me to jump in fright. " You ok?" he questioned. " Yes sir. Dad check out this mare. She is gorgeous." I stated. He picked up the paperwork hanging in front of the mares stall and looked it over ." She definitely has some amazing bloodlines Khloe, but I could see the way she was acting down at the other end of the barn . It would take alot of gentling and training just to get her to race or run in a race or rodeo." He explained.
I grabbed my dads arm pleading for a chance." Dad let me do it ? I have saved alot of money from exercise riding and my allowance over the years. I can train her ." I declared. He looked at me considering the suggestion ,and then at the filly before looking back at me with a smile. " Ok Khloe I will tell you what. I know you have a lot of talent training young horses and a gentle touch, so if another one of the horses I have chose gets outbid we will go into together to get this filly." he smiled. I grinned from ear to ear. " Thanks dad. "I replied. My dad wrapped his arm around me . " Know lets go .The auction is starting ." he stated , as we walked towards our seats.
It was almost noon by the time the broodmares were brought around, and dad had successfully bought all the mares he had chosen. The first young horse dad bid on and won was a young appendix quarter horse black filly called Lafancy Sheik, the next one was a blue roan quarter horse colt he won called Stormin Spartan, and the last two were also fillies both Chesnut called American Cowgirl and Super Girl. My dad was on his last young prospect , and I know its selfish but I was begging God to please let him be outbid. The colt was a popular one , and it was a heated match . But due to his price being $5k my father could not bid anymore. The colt was sold to the other bidder , and I made sure not to let my dad see how exited I was. " Looks like we are going to be able to bid on that filly." he stated. My stomach was in knots as the auction continued. Once the three year olds were started my filly was brought out secondly, and she was rearing and bucking at the handler." I don't know about this ."He declared, watching the filly's antics.. My dad placed the bid first bid on the filly shaking his head , and only one other person tried. My dad bid on her once more , and the auctioneer yell sold . I couldn't believe it , she was definitely wild and abused ; but I felt a connection with the filly . I knew I could train her with time and patience and maybe someday she would be all mine. My father and I walked out to our truck and trailer, waiting to load the horses we had purchased. He handed me the paperwork to check off each horse that was loaded into the trailer. At the bottom was the grey filly's name, Steele Magnolia .
