Today’s the day, the first day of college. My flight lands in California in 2 hours; my new life begins in a mere 2 hours. I’m attending UCLA to study music and studio management, and what better place to learn about music than LA? It’s perfect and I couldn’t be more excited.
I’m flying alone; my family and I decided to save the flight budget for me to fly home on breaks and holidays.
When the plane lands I practically run off it and into the airport, eager to get my bags and get to the campus. I quickly grab my bags from baggage claim. It’s only 2 bags since the rest of my stuff was shipped a month ago. I exit the airport to call a taxi, smiling at the sunny, warm LA weather.
The taxi ride is 45 minutes, giving me plenty of time to admire the city from my window. I’m dropped off at the front gate; I pay my fare, grab my bags and hike up the campus to search for my dorm building.
I find the freshman dorm building with the help of many signs. Stopping in front of the doors, I take a deep breath. This is it. I’m a college student now; this is my home. I walk in, tell the welcome desk my name, and take the key and rooming information they give me.
“Room 362” I mumble repeatedly to myself, scanning the room numbers on the 3rd floor. I find 362 with the door wide open, revealing my roommate unpacking her things.
“Hello?” I say, slowly stepping into the room
“Hey! You must be Taylor! I’m Maria Bates, your roommate! Sorry for the mess” Maria leaps from her spot to hug me.
“Hi, Maria, it’s nice to meet you. Don’t worry about the mess, the room will be messier once I start unpacking” I laugh, hugging her back.
4 hours of unpacking and several rounds of 20-questions later, Maria and I were finally settled in. We collapse onto our beds, tired from the laborious unpacking.
“Do you have a boyfriend?” Maria asks
“Yeah, his name is Sean, he actually goes here” I reply, smiling at the memory of when Sean and I found out we both got in to UCLA. Although I only started dating Sean as a distraction, I’ve grown to really like him. We’ve been dating for about a year. “Do you?”
“Nope, I’m desperately single” Maria sighs, “Don’t worry about me, though, I use my single status well to my advantage. Anyway, we should get to bed, first day of classes is tomorrow!”

My alarm clock goes off at 8 am, waking me up for the first day. I shoot up excitedly; ready to start my new life. Maria is stretching in her bed and when she notices I’m awake she gives me an excited smile. We both get out of bed to get ready. I walk to my closet and pick out the outfit I’ve had planned for weeks. I wanted to make sure my first outfit would be perfect, so I decided on it when I started packing for college. I put it on, do my makeup and hair, and step in front of the mirror.
“You ready?” Maria asks, looking at herself in the mirror beside me. I nod; we grab our bags and then walk to freshman orientation.
