My darling, Vivia,
I arrived safely in Calais three weeks ago. I've been so consumed in matters of state that there's been no time for me to sit down and write. But rest assured that my thoughts of you never cease. You are in my mind at all times and if I sleep, because there simply isn't time to, I dream of you and returning home to Canta. I will write you every day for as long as I can. Do not be alarmed if letters sometimes come few and far between. Sometimes there simply won't be any time to mail them.
Should anyone ask where I've gone off to, please tell them I'm tending to an ill family member. I'd like to be known as Luc de Villiard not Luc Fernbrooke by everyone in Canta. Please, send Agna my love and tell Tomas that I miss our long talks after a game of cards and ale. I hope that you'll write to me. Without you by my side it feels as though I've lost an arm or leg. Some days I simply cannot function.
Yours,
Luc

Dearest, Luc,
I realized only recently that I've never seen your handwriting before. How pretty it is, so regal and elegant. Agna misses you fiercely. The other day we were cleaning the cottage when your cane fell out of my wardrobe. She tripped over it and yelled out for you. Upon realizing you weren't here, she was almost moved to tears.
Although, she'll not admit it.
Papa misses you too. When the first snow fell the night before last he looked forlornly into the woods and I knew that he was thinking of you. He hired a boy from town to help out at the bank but I suspect it's because he's lonely and misses you. As for me...
It's quiet.
You forgot your ring here. Did you know that? I found it in one of my drawers. You must've put it there one day without realizing it. I would hold it for ransom to prompt your return, but I don't want you to be without it. I know how it's your favorite so I'll mail it back with my letter.
I pray that you're successful in your endeavors. Write back to me as soon as you can.
Always,
Your Vivia
