Tom Sawyer was earnest.
Here was a boy,
Respectable and well brought up.
A character to lose,
Knowing but not ignorant,
Not mean but kind.
And yet here he was,
To help steal [a man] from slavery.
You got to invent all the difficulties
Says he.
Got to do the best we can
With the materials we got.
When there warn't one furnished
You had to contrive them
Out of your own head.
A pow'ful sight o'trouble?
Well,
You try it anyway.
We can find a way.
A little more complicated.
There ain't no hurry.
Anyhow-
There's more honor in getting out Through difficulties and dangers.
