Hermione sat at a table in the corner of the Great Hall. The room was roaring with life, and the Weird Sisters were blasting their newest hits, but she was still in a sour mood. Krum had invited her to attend the Yule Ball with him, but he had contracted an illness that took more than a simple potion to recover from. She still came anyway, because she hoped that there would be at least one boy who still needed a date. She also didn't spend all those Galleons to rent an elegant periwinkle dress for nothing.

She waited for a boy to come along and ask her to dance, or at least hang out, but her chances were pretty slim if she was going to mope in the corner, so she stood up and started to casually amble through the dense crowd. Suddenly, she bumped into Fred Weasley. It was as if he had Apparated out of nowhere. He didn't look like much of a happy camper himself.

"Oh dear, I'm sorry..." Hermione said.

"It's okay," Fred grunted. As he tried to brush past her, she couldn't help but wonder:

"Are you okay? Something seems to be troubling you."

Fred didn't look like he was in the mood to talk, but he sighed and said ,"Angelina ditched me. Cho Chang went to hang out with her friends, so Angelina decided to seize the opportunity to go after Cedric." There was a hint of jealousy in his voice. "She only likes the git because he's good at Quidditch," he added.

"Well, I think you're an outstanding player," Hermione replied. She immediately regretted it. This thought had left her lips before she really thought about it. She turned tomato-red.

"That makes two of us," Fred joked. "By the way, care to dance?" A slow dance had started playing right when he asked this.

"It would be an honor," Hermione said. She wished she could take that back and replace it with another phrase. Why was she being so awkward around Fred?

They took each other's hand and danced. It mainly consisted of awkward smiling and stepping on each other's toes, but they had a good time anyway. They soon stopped to get a drink and get to know each other more. Then they danced some more.

Near the end of the ball, almost everyone had already walked back to their dorms to get some rest. There was something that Fred wanted to tell Hermione, and he decided it was the perfect time.

"Hermione," he said, almost whispering. "There's something I want to tell you."

"Yes?"

"I love you," he whispered.

She looked him in the eye and said ,"I love you too."

Their lips made contact and molded together. When they broke apart, the unlikely couple headed back to the common room together.
