Hermione was so distraught that she hardly paid attention to the fact that a full-blown battle had just occurred. Fred Weasley, the love of her life, was dead. Killed by a wall that collapsed because of one of Rookwood's curses. Hermione didn't know until then that she had it in her to use the Killing Curse. But as Bellatrix said, you have to mean it, and Hermione meant it. She had avenged Fred's death without regret, but she felt completely empty on the inside now that he was gone.

She and George knelt over his lifeless corpse, sobbing uncontrollably. How could they not when they were the two people who had loved Fred the most?

"I wish it had been me instead..." George said, barely above a whisper.

Hermione was unable to speak. She couldn't stand to look at his dead body for another second, so she moved a few feet away with her back facing the twins. Her faced was now soaked with tears.

A few minutes later, Hermione couldn't hear George crying anymore. She heard him say, very quietly:

"Hehe. This is our best prank yet."

She immediately whipped around to see that Fred's eyes were wide open, and he had the hugest grin on his face. She couldn't believe it. Why would he play such a joke on her?

"FRED WEASLEY!!! YOU COMPLETE ARSE!!!" She slapped him across the face so hard that the hand print she left on his face looked like a nasty rash. "DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW DEVASTATED I WAS?!?!"

"Well, you see..."

She began to cry even more.

"Hermione..." Fred said, with an air of guilt.

She threw her arms around him and didn't let go for a long time. When they broke apart, Hermione kissed him with all the energy she had left.

"I love you," Fred whispered when they broke apart again.

"I love you too."
