Chapter One
Daisy's P.O.V:
People said nice things. That's what you do at a funeral- you say nice things about the person, even though they're gone.
I stared at the body ahead of me. Phyllis looked peaceful, she wasn't happy alive. She was always scared, scared for the both of us. But now she didn't have to live in fear, she was dead.
Half the town was there, Phyllis was well-known and liked in our little community in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. She worked with mentally and physically disabled children at the Elementary School. Some of them were here, but they didn't really understand the whole concept of 'death.'
Phyllis's daughter, Adrian, didn't really understand it either. She was only 5. I held her close to me as she cried into my side. She knew her mommy was gone, but she didn't know why. She didn't know what happened.
Sev had gotten what he wanted- to destroy me. I didn't know why, but his only purpose in life was to ruin mine.
"Daisy?" I felt a slight tug on my dress. I looked down at the helpless and confused child below me.
"Yes?"
"Why is that man staring at you?" I turned my head towards where she was pointing, and noticed a fairly tall man across the church drilling his eyes right into me. His curly brown hair was pushed out of his face, revealing his piercing green eyes. He was wearing dark skinny jeans and a white t-shirt, attire not appropriate for a funeral. We held eye contact for a brief moment, I had never seen him before in my life.
I looked down at Adrian and smiled, not directly answering her question. She averted her attention back to the service, and held onto my hand even tighter than before.
I took a shaky breath and looked back towards the spot where the man had been standing, but he was gone.
"Daisy," the pastor spoke. "Would you like to say a few words?"
I nodded my head and stood up, making my way to the front of the Church. It was a sunny Wednesday afternoon, usually I enjoy these days, but not today.
I gazed around the Church, staring at the people who I had known since birth. My friends, the neighborhood police men, the owner of Melvin's Grocery's, everyone.
"As many of you know," I began, "Phyllis's death was a tragic accident. She had so much going for her, so much more time to live, but it was all taken away," I cleared my throat and continued. "She was the strongest women I knew, she went through so much to make me the person I am today. She raised me, she was like a mother to me, and I couldn't have asked for a better one. I know she will always be looking over me, over all of us. She loved you all, and she would want to be remembered as the joyous and bubbly person she was before her death. Phyllis's kind heart touched us all, no matter who we are. This community has witnessed a great loss, but Phyllis would want us to stay together. She loved this town more than anything, and she will always be here."
The church was completely silent, no one dared to make a sound. Tears poured from Adrian's big brown eyes, she was so confused. I knew I should have never allowed her to attend this funeral, she doesn't understand.
I slowly made my way back to my seat as the pastor said a final few words. Adrian's little body was pressed against mine as I let her cry into my lap. I was the only person she had left, and I was going to do everything possible to protect her. Even if it meant killing Sev, I would do it. No matter what the cost, I was going to feel safe in my own town again.
