As has become our routine, I have crept down in the early hours of the morning and sent Susannah back to bed, while I take my turn sitting up with the young master. Fortunately, he sleeps most of the time and we can doze by his fire, so we are not too tired for our usual work during the day.

It is now about dawn, and I have awoken from a doze to feel that the air is quite distinctly chill, more so than these previous mornings. I shall build the fire up again, and have a peek beyond the curtains at the world outside the window. Perhaps the rain I had thought was coming is about here at last.

Indeed it started to rain about breakfast time, a fine drizzle which was clearly set in for the rest of the morning.

Miss Charlotte has not come at all today, and the weather is now so bad that I fear it is unlikely she will. I am surprised at how aggrieved this makes me, and I have to tell myself that it is not wise to rely on seeing her to make me happy. Nevertheless, I find it hard to undertake my duties with any degree of enthusiasm.
