I got out the black car that brought me to my final destiny; Bogan High School in Chicago, Illinois. As I walked towards the entrance of the school, the deep voice of the guy in the black hoodie kept replaying in my head, "You come here with a purpose, if you screw up you die." Just listening to his cold voice in my head sent shivers down my spine, but I perfectly knew what I had gotten myself into, and once I am in something I never back out. I didn't know anything about who the guy in the black hoodie was or why was I assigned to do this, but I knew something, once I enter the high school I don't care about getting good grades or making any friends. I just care about going directly to my target and getting my job done. Charlotte Rollins, that was the name they assigned to me for this mission and for once in my life, I like the name they have assigned to me. These were my lasts thoughts before entering the crowded high school, full of gossips and fake friendships that will always end on disaster. I was walking with my gaze directed towards the ground, trying to pass unnoticed, when as the clumsy person I am, I bumped into someone, my gaze directly goes to the face of this mysterious person and I see the face of a very angry and irritated high school girl.
"Umm, excuse me?" The blue icy eyes of the girl penetrated into my soul, making me feel uncomfortable.
I would have actually prefered to tell her to get away from me because by just seeing her I wanted to run away, but since I am trying to pass unnoticed I had to put a 'sorry' face and accept the guilt, "Oh, sorry, I didn't notice where I was going". So Fake.
"Well next time please watch where you are going and never ever touch me again!". After saying that with a high-pitched voice she just flicked her hair, turned around and was already being followed by her two friends, or minions as I like to call them.
I just rolled my eyes and sighed. Typical high school and the mean girls.
After that little incident, which what I guess was with the queen bee of the school, I just kept sliding myself through the halls trying to spot my target while going unnoticed. Tall guy, dark messy hair, green eyes, tanned skin. I kept replaying these words in my head since that was only description they provided me of the target, apart from the name that I had already forgotten. Typical me.
My eyes rummage across the hall, trying to identify him. This will be mission impossible. I start walking through the hall, not knowing where I was going. Suddenly my eyes catch the sight of a girl sitting alone in a corner of the corridor. She seems sad and out of place. As a sudden flashback of when I was in high school popped up in my mind, I see myself standing alone in a corridor when I was around 10 years old. No one would talk to me nor even look at me. I was always alone, no matter how hard I tried to get along with people it always seemed like I didn't belong here, in school, with friends that I could always rely on. This is why I decided to leave school. The reason I left my family and everything behind. I had discovered who I am, and I am someone who doesn't need anyone else to exist in this cruel world.
My thoughts were abruptly interrupted when suddenly I tripped over something and fell to the ground. I was lying on the ground, all my books for the lessons spread in the floor. As I expected it to happen, everyone would glance at me, laugh and then continued their ways to their classes. Tired of being in the floor I stood up and followed to pick all my books one by one.
"Here". My gaze followed the male voice of the person, finding a pair of green eyes looking at me. "Your book", he said. Moving his hand forward for me to grab it from his hands.
"Thanks." That was the only thing I was willing to say to the guy.
"No problem", my eyes wandered across the room trying to watch anywhere except his eyes, I didn't want to make eye contact, but I couldn't help it, and suddenly my eyes met his again. I then followed to look at his messy dark hair and perfectly tanned skin. He is my target!
"What is your name?" I said without thinking it twice.
"I'm Jason, Jason Parker". Jason... Jason... that was the name! He is my target. "What is your name?"
"Oh, my name is Charlotte Rollins". I say firmly, maintaining my fake identity
"What a nice name you have." He said "Hey Charlotte, would you like to go eat some ice cream after school? You know, to get to know each other a little bit more". Weird. You don't usually invite people you barely know for an ice cream.
"Sure" This is going to be so easy. "Wait, but can we meet in the store? I just need to do some things before going there". More like meeting up with someone.
"Sure, no problem. Well then I'll see you at the 'Ben & Jerry's' at around 4?"
"Perfect". I said trying to sound excited. "See you there!" After saying that I just waved at him and turned around, trying to find my first class of the day, Maths.
The rest of the day felt like an eternity, in each of the classes I would stare at the handles of the clock moving just a tiny bit per second. When the bell signaling the end of the last period rang I felt alive once again. I grabbed my purple with white stripes bag from under my desk and flashed out of the prison cell, known as classrooms by the students.
I walked rapidly through the halls, dodging everyone who passed in front of me. In a couple of minutes I reach the entrance of the high school, and pass through the door signaling my freedom for a couple of minutes.
As I start walking to the nearest park a soft breeze caresses my cheeks, making me observe the beautiful variety of colours of leaves hanging from the branches of the trees. A daily reminder that we are currently in fall. I keep walking slowly until I reach the park, I remove the dust from a bench with my hands and follow to sit down, waiting for my boss to appear.
A couple of minutes later I start listening to the irritating sound of leaves creaking anywhere near me, I turn my head 90 degrees to the right and I am able to recognize the shadow of a tall person. It must be my boss, trying to check if it's safe to come out from the trees.
After watching him discreetly check if it is safe he comes out of what seems like a forest. He starts walking towards me, and stops right in front of me. I stand up, since I feel extremely diminute sitting down when he is standing up looking like a huge tower.
"So. 'Charlotte', update me". He says with the usual cold and sharp voice that comes from his mouth.
"I have already recognized and talked to the target. I am meeting with him in a couple of minutes in a nearby ice cream shop to try to get closer to him". I try my best for my voice to come out cold and sharp, just as his, attempting to show no emotions and fears is essential for what I do.
"Well then, I won't entertain you anymore. But don't you ever forget, that this is not a silly game for kids we are playing, this is like playing with your own life. You have 48 hours, so you better get your job done or you know what happens next". As he said this, his voice tone never changed, showing how much of a cold-hearted person he is, not caring about anyone or anything.
"Yes sir". Immediately after ending my two-word phrase he just turns around and leaves, heading back to where he came from. I then head my way to the known ice cream store; 'Ben & Jerry's' to meet with Jason.
