Loosing someone never get easier, and it will never be.
In time the wounds may heal, but only if you will yourself to let them heal.
And right now, you didn't have that will, you lost your daughter, the small amount of hope you had was suddenly ripped away from you, and now you couldn't see the light, how could you allow yourself to heal, when you had already lost it all?
Everyday, for the past week the group would see you sitting at her grave, as each day passed it seemed you lost yourself even more, how could they comfort someone who had to shoot their own child?
But Daryl wasn't one to give up, his stubborn nature pushed him to keep going, he already lost his brother, he wasn't gonna lose you too, someone who showed him how to love, how he was actually needed in this group, that he was a good man.
You stared blankly at the wooden cross, drawing little circles in the dirt work your index finger, then you heard light footsteps, only Daryl was that quiet, so you didn't turn around, you simply continued to stare, you felt his presence behind you. His shadow casting above you like a tree would.
Without another word he sat next to you and placed a single white flower on your knee, you looked at it then at him, his blue orbs held saddens but also love, the only love he ever showed you, it was only you who could get to see this side of him.
"What's this?" You asked weakly
"A cherokee rose" He gruffly responded.
You carefully ran your fingers through its delicate petals.
"It's beautiful" you smiled sadly at him, his lip twitched in an upward movement in an attempt of a half smile. Then he started- "The story is that when American soldiers were moving Indians off their land on the trail of tears the Cherokee mothers were grieving and crying so much 'cause they were losing their little ones along the way from exposure and disease and starvation. A lot of them just disappeared. So the elders, they, uh, said a prayer. Asked for a sign to uplift the mothers' spirits, give them strength and hope. The next day, this rose started to grow right where the mothers' tears fell." Daryl paused and looked at you, your vibrant orbs looking back at his own.
"I'm not fool enough to think there's any flowers blooming for my brother....But, I believe this one bloomed for your little girl."
A single tear rolled down your cheek as he finished the story.
You looked up to meet his gaze, and shakily answered.
"No, Daryl, this rose, is for the both of them, it bloomed just for them"
Daryl then reached out to hold you, and in that moment you knew that everything would be ok, and that you would allow yourself to heal, the both of you.
