I waited anxiously from my perch above the well trodden path. I could feel the adrenaline pulsating through my veins just like it did every time we did a job. Everything was perfectly in place and planned out to the smallest detail. At this point, we were veterans at the game. We were experts in the art of the steal.
From my view I could see the carriage coming. Three guards on horses stationed in the front, three in the back and two sat perched perfectly at the front of the carriage. This was too easy.
Quietly, I hopped from branch to branch to reach my marker as the carriage steadily approached. From one of the tree limbs, I tugged on the taught rope that was connected among the trees on either side of the road. The tight rope was sturdy enough and with quick movements I secured my bow to my back, tightened my hood and scarf, and then began to shimmy my way on the rope upside down. I sent out small prayers that the rope wouldn't decide to fray under my weight.
Underneath me I could see the carriage stop as it neared the fallen tree. "Halt!" The Commander shouted. "Men, do what you can to remove this tree," All the guards except the two manning the carriage took to action. The tree wasn't large so the time it took for them to move it would only be about ten minutes which meant I had to hurry.
After a few minutes I closed in the distance to the middle of the line. My arms were burning from the strain and if my hands weren't gloved then I had a sneaking suspicion that my fingers would be in three times the pain they were already in. Slowly I bent my head back to watch the scene unfold and to make sure my alignment was right. Just a hair off and this part of the plan would go terribly wrong.
I counted in my mind down from Five. 'Four, three, two...' Right on cue the carriage door flung open and a blonde haired noble with a red jacket on stepped from the coach. "What seems to be the problem here?" He stood with his hands on his hips as he spoke with the commander. After a moment of talking he set off to help the men as well.
I furrowed my brow, what kind of noble was this to actually dirty his precious hands by helping someone else? He certainly wasn't from the breed that I was use to dealing with. Despite his good deed that plan was to continue on. The tree was nearly removed and I let go of my legs to let myself dangle.
Slowly the guard holding the reigns of the carriage looked up at me and slightly nodded. It was time. Gently, I let go of my grasp and let myself drop through the air. At the same moment, the guard kicked his seat mate out on to the ground with and oomf. "Hey!" He yelled just as I landed on the roof of the carriage. Perfect aim.
With that, he slapped the reigns and the carriage lurched into action. "Stop! Thieves!" But he was too late at alerting the others who were just setting the tree out of our way. We had to work fast now, it would only take them moments before they would be ready to ride and after us.
"Nice aim." The guard smirked over his shoulder at me.
"Nice outfit." I retorted making him smile. "Alright Marin, keep us fast and steady." I patted him on the shoulder just before I laid flat on the top of the carriage. Swiftly I removed the stakes from the hinges and let the door fly off.
I heard a squeak from the inside as I rolled inside. "Hi there." I said smoothly. Before I could say anything else, the noblewoman let out a punch in my direction which I swiftly blocked. I grabbed her hand and shoved her back into her seat. "Now, now fair lady, that's not very nice. "
"Who are you." The brunette asked and I sighed.
"Seriously? Green hood, arrows, thievery and you still can't piece it together on your own?"
She narrowed her eyes at my sarcasm. "Why are you doing this? We have done nothing to you to deserve this."
I scoffed as I patted her down and grabbed as few knives off of her. I spun one in my hand. "Isn't this curious that a noble lady as yourself would be armed." Out of the corner of my eye I could see her inching her hand down to her ankle. I quickly grabbed her hand. "Seriously lady?" I took the knife out from its holster and added it to my collection. "If I wanted to hurt you or the others I would have already. Now tell me where the gold is."
"How old are you? You couldn't be more than what fifteen?" She looked at me concerned. Like she knew me.
"That doesn't matter. Now where is the gold?" I was getting frustrated at this point.
"Hurry up would ya!" Marin yelled back.
"I'm trying! " My patience was wearing thin.
"You're so young. " She mused on.
I rolled my eyes. "Yes, we've established that. And now since you've been of absolutely no help, it's time to say good-bye." I tugged her up and pulled her to the open door.
"You don't have to do this."She told me in confidence without any pleading in her voice. If this lady was scared, she sure wasn't showing it.
"Actually I do since you've decided to not make this easier on either of us."
"No," She turned to me, "I meant stealing. You don't have to steal."
My frustration fumed. "Yes actually, I do. Because if it weren't for nobles like you then the poor wouldn't be dying just because they can't feed their own families. Or how about the fact the tons of peasants die weekly because they can't pay their taxes because of nobles like you keep raising the prices just to line your pockets. So yes. I have to do this. Somebody has to do this." My voice was dark and I could see her staring into my eyes and seeing the same fire. "You're going to want to tuck and roll."
"We aren't so different you know." She whispered and I laughed.
"Princess, we are nothing alike." With that I swiftly gave her a shoving sending her tumbling with agility. "Give the Mister my regards!" I went to wave at her only to curse under my breath at the realization that she took my glove with her during her tumble.
I climbed out of the carriage and to the back where two chests were.
"Oh, so you're finally done with your little chat. I hope it was nice!"
"Shut up Marin and just drive!" Quickly I set to work picking the locks. The first one was full of clothes which would sell nicely on the black market. The second one held just what I was looking for. Hidden nicely under a layer of books sat several pounds of coins. I let out a low whistle. "Beautiful." I set to tying together the bags and as we crossed the bridge I flung them over into the shallow water.
"Alright, lets ditch the carriage and we'll come back for the gold." I told Marin as I plopped down beside him.
"Whatever you say Robbie, Whatever you say."
