Chapter 1: Dream of me
"Cut the crap and do your job!" Amihan's voice rang throughout the whole length of the Practical Arts pavilion. Himig ducked as a shower of flying magic cards sailed through the air. He watched as his little sister bullied his friend Alab to submission. At fifteen, and a grade lower than them, it is surprising that she's the only one who can prod Alab to do anything.
Growing up with Amihan provided Himig's life with its everyday color. She can be best described as an angel with the mouth of a banshee. Despite her age, she has already proven how smart and reliable she can be. She has excelled well in her studies and the captain of the girl's basketball and volleyball club. Amihan is also the president of the Literary Circle for two years running. Himig believes that there is nothing she can't do if she sets her mind to it.
"Go!" Amihan pointed a finger in the direction of the new building. "Right, right" Alab said as he grabbed what he can of his discarded deck and stuffed it inside his backpack. Other guys would probably freak out and be furious with Amihan, but Alab could only grumble and do what she asks.
Himig sat on the bench that Alab had just vacated and looked up at his fuming sister.
"Galing ah, bilib ako sa'yo"(that was simply great, I'm impressed).
"Isa ka pa"(you too). She looked at him sharply. "What are you doing goofing off? You're supposed to be working with your beat today" she meant his job in the school paper.
He gave a small shrug of his shoulders. "That's why I'm waiting for the results of the raffle draw from Mr. Garcia." He smiled up at her. "And I'm supposed to get our thesis proposal from Prof. Villa. Alab and I should be starting on our survey questionnaires". Every student is required to pass a thesis before graduating.
The four of them are studying in UP Integrated School, a small, under-funded government high school in the heart of Quezon City. It serves as a lab school for graduating education students from the university. The last time the school was renovated was probably 30-40 years ago so everything looks like its gonna fall apart at the slightest hint of an earthquake. Even the supposed new building was built 30 years ago and was only called new because it was built 20 years later than the old building. It has been a private joke running around the school for the longest time.
Mr. Garcia appeared in the doorway and beckoned for Himig to get inside the department. He stood up and bid goodbye to his sister. He stepped inside the department.
Amihan started off to the English Pavilion. She spotted Mayumi along the way.
"Hey, Yumi!" she called out
"Morning." Mayumi said with a smile. "Have you seen Himig?"
"He's in the PA Department."
"Oh," she paused. "Well, where are you off to?"
"Elective, Devt. Journ." she made a face "I wouldn't mind getting in late though. Ma'am hardly keeps attendance anyway."
"That's the beginning of a really bad habit," Mayumi frowned. Amihan made a face.
"Where are you off to?" she asked the older girl.
Mayumi blushed a deep shade of scarlet. "Uh, nowhere in particular". Amihan hid a smile as she guessed at what Mayumi was thinking. The older girl's feelings for her brother were really evident in the way she cared for him. If ever Mayumi would ask for her help with her brother she'd gladly give her both of her hands, but as usual, Yumi is of the quiet sort.
She sighed as she turned to Yumi. "I'll be off now, good luck with my brother" she said with a wink as she hurried to her class, leaving Mayumi spluttering in the middle of the corridor.
