Perspective: Mirlou

People often ask me what I wanted to be when I was younger. My answer is always 'I don't know'. And it's not a lie, I genuinely do not know. I was so carefree as a kid, I never thought about the future. It's something my mom taught me. She would sit down and talk to us about 'how you need to live right now, because you don't know if something will happen in an hour'. She often gave those speeches when one of my siblings were having a crisis about their life and future. All of my brothers and sisters were born as full-on demons. I was different. When I was born, and during quite a few years of my life, there was no trace of being a demon. Now, though, I am the most demonic of all. I lock eyes with my reflection in the mirror, as I brush my hair. Not my mirror, not my brush. I'm just standing in a regular ol' public bathroom, taking care of my dirty, greasy hair with a brush that I stole out of someone's bag.

'Why are you like this,' I whisper to myself as I stuff the brush into a plastic bag. I turn around and look at the clock. It's 7 AM and school starts in an hour. I sigh and put my hair up in a ponytail, before leaving the bathroom. It's hard and not fun at all to be homeless, but at least Mirthe signed me up for this. Kind of rude of her to not take me in.

'Are you ever gonna fucking walk?!'

'Sorry miss.' I step aside for the woman waiting behind me.

'Tsch, teenagers.'

Don't reply.

The weather is, in all honesty, disgusting. Spring is right around the corner yet it still snowed a few days ago. There are remnants of shoved up snow and ice among the sides of the street, and everything is slippery. It wouldn't be a surprise if someone slipped and fell. The sky is still dark too, which gives this even more of a cold vibe. I put on my hood and start making my way towards school, kicking some annoying ice clumps out of my way.

'Don't you just hate this weather?'

I turn around in surprise, now looking one of my classmates straight in the face. Quick, look away.

'Hey Lulu!'

'Hey Mir! Up early, are you?'

'Yeah.' A soft smile appears on my face. Lulu's such a nice girl.

'Did you study for the test today?'

'Excuse me, what?'

'The test! Don't tell me you forgot about it.' She puffs up her cheeks, looking at me with a faked angry expression. I just laugh at her.

'Stop that, you don't look angry at all.'

'But did you?'

'Maaaaybe.'

Lulu angrily pokes my side. 'Just answer me!'

'I forgot.'

We both laugh. I wish life could always be peaceful like this.

'So Mir...'

'Yes?'

She stops and puts her hands in the pockets of her coat.

'Are you going to pass this year?'

'I think so. Why?'

'Yay! So we will be in the same class next year?'
