Castiel
Incline Village, Nevada
I let my mind wander as I idly sketched the lines of Dean's eyes. I thought about my first day so far as I ran my pencil across the paper. All in all, not terrible. It could've been so much worse. If Dean hadn't decided to talk to me, I probably would've been thinking something entirely different. I stared at the face in the corner of my note paper. It would've been better with a reference. Maybe one day, Dean would let me draw him. I laughed at myself. Maybe one day? Did I seriously think this friendship would last? Dean was probably just going to drop me like everyone else in my life. I shook my head at my own stupidity and continued adding freckles to the portrait.
Finally, the first bell rang, and I settled into the monotony of an AP US History lecture.

My last class of the day was German. To my surprise, Dean was there when I walked in. He was talking with a few of his friends, so I figured it would be easy enough to go unnoticed and sit one of the open spots in the back. I was wrong.
"Castiel!"
Damnit. Dean saw me. I turned around slowly and gave small wave. "Hello, Dean," I said.
He beckoned me over, "Come sit up here, Cas."
Oh, he was giving me a nickname already. It was interesting. Nobody really called me Cas. Gabriel called me Cassie and everyone else just stuck with Castiel. I guess I'm just not really the type of person to seem accepting of nicknames. Realizing I hadn't answered Dean, I said, "I'm fine in the back, but thanks." I gave a small smile to show I wasn't trying to be rude and then turned to go to the empty back of the room.
I set my bag on the ground and pulled out my German notebook and textbook. I looked up from my backpack only to see Dean setting his stuff down at the desk next to mine. I gave him a quizzical look. "What-" I started to ask, but he cut me off. "I didn't want you to be lonely back here by yourself."
He sat down and smiled at me and I felt my heart do a flip and my wings shudder slightly. Why did he have to be so attractive? I coughed slightly and said, "That's very kind of you, but wouldn't you prefer to sit with your friends up there?"
"Do you not want me to sit back here?" Dean asked, a slight note of sadness in his voice that could be easily missed if you only payed attention to his stoic face.
"What? No. Of course I am fine with you sitting here. It's nice. I just... Why would you prefer to be here rather than with them?" I asked, dumbfounded.
Dean just waved away my question, "I hang out with them all the time. Besides, you're more interesting." Dean flashed me a small smile. I tried to smile back while simultaneously trying to hide the small blush creeping up my cheeks. I sat down right as the teacher walked in and opened my notebook.
The bell rang and the teacher introduced himself and began to lecture us about grammar. I found it extremely hard to focus with Dean sitting at the desk next to mine. It wasn't just that I found him very attractive, I also had a strange feeling of déjà vu. I felt like I had experienced something like this before. Dean sitting to the left of me felt natural: like we had done it everyday for years. I could sense a memory trying to surface, but it wouldn't leave the top of my tongue. The more I focused on the lost memory, the more it evaded me, so I gave up.
I got through last period by staring at the posters on the walls that the teacher had put up. Picturesque scenes of the german countryside and dramatic views of landmarks. They were interesting pictures. I tried to figure out the life stories of the people who might have taken them. It was a challenging game without knowing the person's name, but I could tell a bit about the photographer just by their style.
Finally the last bell rang, and I happily put my books into my backpack. I looked up to see Dean waiting for me. "Oh," I said, "I am sorry. I did not know you were waiting for me."
"Don't apologize. You're fine," Dean said, "You ready?"
I nodded and followed him out of the classroom and to parking lot. The minute we stepped outside, Dean swore under his breath.
"What is it?" I asked.
"My dad," Dean replied, pointing to a middle aged man sitting on the hood of a beaten up black car.
"What's wrong with your dad?" I asked.
"He's not supposed to be back for another few days."
Before I could ask where Dean's father had been, he said, "Well, see ya tomorrow, Cas." He waved before begrudgingly walking over to his dad. As I watched Dean go, I realized his father had been watching us the entire time with a strange expression on his face. He continued to stare at me quizzically, so I gave him a weird look back before turning away to find my car.
When I got there, Gabriel was already there, leaning against the side of the car talking to Dean's younger brother, Sam. Gabe didn't even notice me approaching until I clicked the unlock button on the keys, and the car beeped. Gabriel jumped and, noticing standing there, glared. "Took you long enough," he said.
I just shrugged. Gabe shook his head in response and turned back to Sam. "Well I guess I gotta go. See you tomorrow, right?"
"Of course," Sam said with a shy smile.
Gabriel beamed, "Great! See ya!"
Sam gave a tiny smile and waved as he walked away. I wondered if he knew about his dad being back.
Gabe and I climbed into the car and drove away from the school. As always, Gabriel was jumping with excitement in his seat. "What is it this time?" I asked.
"Didn't you see?" Gabriel said with a huge smile, "Sam and I are friends! He's so nice, but he's really quiet and shy, so I don't know that much about him yet. I think that after a few days he'll open up a little more though. I think we're gonna be really close!"
"Good for you, Gabriel," I said.
"How about you, Cas? How did you're first day go?"
"Fine," I said, but internally, I smiled, thinking about just how amazing the day had really been.

Sorry that there haven't been any updates for a while. School was very hectic at the end of the year what with exams and final assignments. Now I finally have some time to write. Hopefully there will be another update soon! Again, very sorry, and I hope you are enjoying the story so far.
