You're Broken

35 4 4

You're broken. Cracked porcelain and tear streaks,
Torn fabrics and dark, rough, unmoving stains.
Your eyes are getting duller, your smile cracks,
I see you slowly dying. Cold. Alone.

I've seen the unspeakable: blood that leaks
From open, self inflicted wounds... It reigns
Over you and it stops me in my tracks
Because I don't think you're truly alone.

I've seen so many people who feel like
You do. I have as well, but I promise

You'll have adventures, the things that you'll see
Will remind you you're alive: set you free.

...

This is an original type of sonnet structure that I've been trying out and this is my first complete sonnet in the style!
The structure is:
A quatrain of a b c d rhyme scheme,
Another quatrain of a b c d rhyme scheme,
A couplet of e f rhyme scheme, with the Volta existing on the first line of this,
And a rhyming couplet at the end to wrap it all up neatly :)
Each line is ten syllables long and the poem is fourteen lines long, as per usual with sonnets.

Context:
I wrote this tonight after reflecting on the time I spent being part of the mental health side of social networking (i.e. secret depression accounts, eating disorder accounts etc.)
Although I am suffering, tonight was lighter than most, and so I wrote this to distract it from coming back.
I wrote this with inspiration from Constellations by Enter Shikari.

If you've read all of this then thank you so much, it means the world to me. I just wanted to give a short explanation for this poem in particular as I felt it necessary.

Keep fighting everyone, you're doing great.
