October 1984

Salsa pulsated through the studio space soon taking over Rita's petite body as she made swift movements across the floor, paying no attention to the crowd that was slowly forming outside the door.

Once the song had finished she was met with applause and whistles.

She picked up her bag from the floor before heading towards the door until she was stopped by the manager, Paul.

"Very impressive Rita. I know you only took a job in this studio as a cleaner but if I had known you danced..."

"Well I just required a simple part time job since I'm a student at NYU, remember?"

"How about I offer you a proper position, something suited for a dancer like you? We need more semi trained dancers assisting our lead instructors. I think schools like NYU highly favour students that have a paid internship."

Rita's eyes widened, an out of the blue job offer involving dance was enough for her to jump up but she managed to surpress the urge.

"If I was to accept this I can only do Wednesday to Friday in the evening."

"Great! So I'll see you next Wednesday. Congratulations." Rita shook Paul's hand with a little over enthusiasm.

"Oops sorry and thank you so much!"

It was six in the evening when Rita's taxi made a pit stop at a ballet studio where María taught young children. Her sister came running out with her bag in hand.

"Hey sis! What's with the shades?"

Rita felt it was right to wear her sunglasses riding around the streets in New York style in a yellow taxi.

"Wearing these for effect!" Rita giggled, "guess what happened at work?"

"I wish I could guess but I'm supposed to be heading to the nightclub nearby, my friend's magazine is hosting this huge exclusive Halloween party and wanted me to give her a hand."

"Damn I love Halloween. Hey am I invited to this party?"

"Of course! When you've found a costume, go over to Claire's apartment. I'll see you later, okay?"

"I don't know what to wear though!"

"Don't worry, Claire knows a thing or two about costumes." María gave a cheeky wink.

Rita turned towards Javier, her regular taxi driver, giving him the signal to continue driving.
