Lesson 2: Yes and No

네 [ne] = YES
아니요 [a-ni-yo] = NO

Remember: Saying "네" and "아니요" is not the same as saying "yes" and "no" in English.

How: Because the Korean expresses agreement while the 아니요 expresses your disagreement.

Example:
Someone asks you, "메시 안 좋아해요?" [Messi an-jo-a-hae-yo?] =You don't like Messi? and if your answer is "No, I don't like Messi" you have to say "네" [ne] = yes.

To be more accurate:

Korean's 네 and 아니요 could also mean;

•네 [ne] - That's right/ I agree/ Sounds good/ What you said is correct.

•아니요 [a-ni-yo] - That's not right/ I don't agree/ What you said is incorrect.

MORE SAMPLES IN SENTENCES.

(Imagine that A and B is an actual person having a conversation, in order to have an effective practice.)

Tip: You can imagine it as if you are watching a drama or better if you imagine that you are having a real conversation with a Korean!

A: 엑스 안 좋아해요? [EXO an-jo-a-hae-yo?] = You don't like EXO?
B: 아니요. 좋아해요. [A-ni-yo. Jo-a-hae-yo] = Yes. I like EXO.

A: 사생 안 좋아해요? [Sa-saeng an-jo-a-hae-yo?] = You don't like sasaeng?
B: 네. 안 좋아요. [Ne. An-jo-a-hae-yo] = Yes. I don't like Sasaeng.

Another: 네 is more than just a "YES" or "That's right" it is also used as a conversation filler.

Conversation Sample
(Just imagine that it is all in Korean)

A: You know what, I bought a BTS concert ticket yesterday,
B: 네
A: and I'm so excited.
B: 네
A: Do you know how much is it?
B: How much?
A: 20, 000 pesos
B: 네?
A: So I paid it using all my savings.
B: 네 ...
A: But it was worth it.
B: 네 ...

Therefore, 네 is a multi-player. Aside from Yes and That's right, it could also mean;

I see./ I got it./ I'm here! (when someone calls you)/ I understand./ Ah-ha.

MORE ABOUT 네. (Isn't 네 amazing?)

네 could also mean, "What did you say?"

For example, someone said something to you but you couldn't hear the person well or you weren't paying much attention.

It means 네, could also mean;
Pardon me?/ I'm sorry?/ What did you say?/ I didn't hear you well.

...or you could use 네 to show surprise.

A: 사랑해요 [sa-rang-hae-yo] = I love you
B: 네? [Ne] = Pardon me?
A: 사랑해요 [sa-rang-hae-yo] = I love you
B: 네? [Ne] = (I didn't hear you well)
A: 뙜어 [ddwae-sseo] = nevermind
B: 네? [Ne] = *Act of Surprise
