Chapter Two
“Thomas! We’re going to be late for class!” Thomas keeps dragging me behind him as he walks up to the librarian. He puts on his sweet Thomas face, his chocolate brown eyes twinkling as he spoke to her. “Could you please contact Miss Rochester and tell her Aleka Dakota and Thomas Fletcher will be working on their assignments in the library?” The librarian blinks at him and nods her head while she reaches for the phone.
Thomas smiles and grabs my arm again dragging me to the Psychology section. “Do you even know what you’re looking for?” Thomas runs his finger down the row of books and taps one before pulling it off the shelf. He runs over to a table in the back and flips it open making a thud on the table in the process.
The book is huge, old and dusty. “When was the last time anyone even touched this?” Thomas waves me off and continues scanning the book. I sigh loudly and sit down across from him and start playing Bach’s Suite No. 3 in D Major on the table. I’ve been playing piano ever since I could remember, or well, I did. My dad taught me the basics before he left and I kept learning in hopes he would come back…I gave up on that real quick. I glance up at Thomas and he’s flipping pages so quickly that I don’t even know if he’s reading them.
“Hey, genius, what are we doing?” Thomas puts a finger up and finally stops flipping. He turns the book to me and leans back in his chair smugly. “What is this?”
He tilts his chair back and rests his hands behind his neck, “The answer to all your questions.”
I glare at him through my thick lashes and he sits upright. “Alight, alright, calm down. This is a book about dreams. Tells you how and why you dream and most importantly, what dreams could possibly mean.”
“How could they possibly know –“
“It’s a psychology, Aleka. My dad is working on something like it right now. Trust me okay?”
I exhale and begin to read the passage Thomas pointed out. “Recurring dreams are quite common and are often triggered by a certain life situation, transitional phase in life or a problem that keeps coming back again and again.” I look up at him and he begins flipping again to a page called ‘Dictionary.’ He points out ‘Boy’ and I continue to read. “Alternatively, it may represent your feelings about a real-life boy important or significant to you.”
“What are you trying to say, T-bag?”
“Do you like Craig?”
I close my eyes and shake my head, “No.”
“…Do you like me?”
I throw my hand over my mouth and stifle a giggle, “God, no.”
“Then we need to dig deeper.”
I put my hands on his and stop him, “Thank you for trying to help, Dr. Thomas, but I don’t think these are normal dreams.”
“How do you mean?”
“They feel so real…I can smell, hear, taste and touch things…it’s like I’m in another world or something.”
“Like teleporting?”
I shake my head, “No. Like get this, last night I was in a meadow with the boy or guy, whatever, and in class I was on a battlefield in the Civil War with him.”
