1969
"I think we should go back to little gigs, because I really think we're a great little band. We should find our basic roots, and then who knows what will happen? We may want to fold after that, or we may really think we've still got it." Paul grinned, staring at John.
"Well, I think you're daft," John said finally. "I wasn't going to tell you until we signed the Capitol deal, but I'm leaving the group!' Paul and Ringo's jaws dropped. "It's weird, telling you I'm leaving the group, but in a way it's very exciting," he continued.
"You can't!" He cried. "You can't just leave!"
"Yes I can."
"Is it because of her?!" Paul pointed to Yoko in the corner.
"No!" John snapped.
"I don't know about you, but I'm not signing anything!" Ringo pushed his chair back. "Not after you say something like that! Wait until George finds out!"
"Oh, grow up, Starkey! We all knew this was coming!"
It was true, they had known. Things were bad ever since Brian had died, everything slid downhill so fast. That didn't make the reveal any less shocking, though.
"Don't do this to us," Paul growled. "After all we've been through, you're throwing all of it away for her!"
"I just told you it wasn't because of Yoko, you bastard!" John stood up, walking over to where he was sitting.
"Then why?!" Paul stood up as well. "Give me a reason!"
"I don't owe you a fucking thing." Their faces were nearly touching. "I've made up my mind, The Beatles are dead."
"Come on, John," Yoko whispered, taking his arm. "Let's just go." He didn't seem to notice.
"Why are you such a jerk?!" Paul had angry tears running down his cheeks. "How could you do this to me?!"
"To you?! Not everything is about you, Paul!" John leaned in closer, showing the pure rage in his eyes. "You may think so, but you're wrong! Why would this affect you more than anyone else?!"
"BECAUSE I LOVE YOU!" he shouted.
"WELL - wait, what?" All anger melted away. "What did you say to me?"
"I said I love you." Paul wiped his eyes. "No, I'm in love with you, John Winston Ono Lennon."
"Paul, I..." John shook his head. "I - I didn't know."
"Now you do." He stroked his cheek, then leaned in for a tender kiss. His other hand went up to flip the bird in Yoko's face, making her scowl and cross her arms. She tugged on John's sleeve again, but he didn't respond. Paul's hand dropped, but he didn't pull away. When he tried to, John wrapped an arm around his waist and brought him closer. "Mmm."
"Paul." They finally broke away for air, gasping. "Paulie, I love you too."
"What just happened?" Ringo's eyes were wide. "I'm gonna go out for a smoke break."
