Teenage Depression and Suicide

This is a sensitive subject to me. I read about stuff like this in the news all the time. I even have a few friends here on Wattpad that have been battling depression and are only teenagers. A lot of it comes from peer pressure and different things that occur in junior high and high school. In a lot of school shootings, the shooters were usually depressed and were victims of bullying. It's quite sad to hear about actually because of the fact that they're still so young and their lives haven't even fully began.

The first half of my high school years were rough. People wanting to do what was popular instead of what was right. Well, what is popular is not always right. Sex, drugs, underage drinking. Those are what can start a person's downfall. Everyone is wanting to be with the "in" crowd. No, I wasn't bullied per say, but I was picked on quite a bit. I had a few crushes in high school as well. But the feelings were unrequited. That is what depressed me most my freshman and sophomore years of high school. The most I ever did in terms of self harm was scratched my arm to the point that it bled. The pain from that was so bad. After realizing what I did, I asked myself "why am I doing this? What does it really solve?" The answer to the first question: stupid,  insignificant reasons. The answer to the second question: Nothing. Absolutely nothing. By my junior year, I started hanging out with other people who literally changed my whole outlook on life. They were positive people who were always optimistic and positive about things. The more I hung out with them, the more positive I became.

As far as bullying goes, why do people bully others? It usually is because they're bored or their own lives suck that by bringing others down, their lives don't look as bad. Again, stupid reasons if you ask me. Peer pressure again plays a role as well. If you're reading this and are one of those who are bullied, there is one question that you need to ask yourself: What makes them so superior to you? Usually the answer is nothing. That question alone helped me in dealing with bullies.

If someone is depressed and is trying to figure out how to stop the depression, first thing that should be done is figure out what initially started it. Then figure out other factors that contribute to the depression. A lot of times it's just a matter of who or what is in your life. Cutting out all negativity if possible is a good start, even if it means letting a few friends go. It sounds easier than what it is honestly. But it's for the best. Another way of turning things around is simply doing small things. Taking a walk to clear your mind, writing in a journal, listening to upbeat music, etc. Surprisingly these small things can make quite an impact as well.

We all have our own battles and demons to deal with. But one thing that you need to keep in mind is this: You Are Not Alone! There are people out there facing similar situations you are. There are ways to help with depression and suicidal thoughts. If it comes down to having to talk with a counselor, by all means do so if you feel it will help. No one will judge you when they know you are just trying to seek help or just finding someone to talk to. Most people think, "Oh he/she is crazy. They're seeing a shrink!" Forget them! It's not their problem nor any of their business what you do! You do what it takes to help get your mind straight.

I talk to people all the time on Wattpad who are battling depression. Yes, I may be 31 years old and they are still teenagers. But I can relate to what they go through based on my own experiences or experiences I've heard others have gone through and overcame. I don't judge anyone either. If you want to talk to me just for the sake of talking and letting it out, please do so! Don't be scared. We are all human after all!
