The school bell chimed. School was out for another day! Quickly, you grabbed your shuffled school supplies together and stowed them away (in a neat fashion as you always do/ threw the jumbled mess into your bag). One of the last students in the room, you slung your bag over your shoulder and followed the crowd of energetic students into the hall.

"[F/N]!" a man with a husky voice yelled. He was standing at the other end of the hall, peering over the crowd, waving his hand in your direction. You recognized him immediately as his face was a foot higher than the rest of the students.

"Okuyasu!" you returned the wave back to him as he energetically made his way through the crowd, keeping his eyes fixated on you.

"[F/N], let's go get some coffee," he suggested in a relaxed tone, leaning toward you, making you feel less short in his presence as he was face to face.

"Coffee (or a hot /iced cup of tea) sounds great."

"How was your day?" he asked.

"It went well. I'm starting to like this school."

Side-by-side, you walked down the sunlit hall. You had only arrived at the school a week prior. Okuyasu greeted you on the first day, telling you he was new at the time as well. He had been at this school for only a month. In fact, he was very open about his personal life and explained he lived with his brother in an old house.

"I'll show you around Morioh-cho this weekend," he stated.

"That would be great~" you smiled at your new friend. With his hands shoved in his pockets and bag under his arm, he returned your smile with a huge grin. "How were your classes?" you asked, in an attempt to reciprocate his full of life spirit.

"Well, I'm not doing so well in most of them, honestly," he scratched the back of his head awkwardly, "but I hung out with my friend all day, so it was a good day!"

"You didn't mention a friend before."

"Yeah, Josuke! I'll have you meet him soon enough. The only reason he's not with me today is because his mother needed him at home right away."

"Oh..."

Exiting the building, the sun blinded the both of you. After your eyes adjusted, you admired the blossoming cherry trees around you, suggesting that spring was in full bloom. Unfortunately, you had arrived at this school near the end of the year, but you knew you'd make this unfamiliar town home in no time. This seemed to be a pleasant town to live in, after all. Not bizarre in the least ...

"The cherry trees look beautiful," you whispered to yourself, not realizing you spoke aloud.

"Yes, they do!"

"Too bad it will only last for a week or two..."

"Oh, really??" Okuyasu seemed intrigued.

"Yeah, they only stay in bloom for a short period of time. That's why they are cherished when they are in bloom. You can appreciate the flowers but then as quickly as they bloom, they fade away."

"Ohhh~" he said with his mouth wide open, looking up at the trees in a surprised manner.

"You're Japanese! How could you not have known that?" you giggled.

"Well, I knew they didn't bloom long but I never thought about it... you must be really smart [F/N]!" the easily impressed Okuyasu glanced over at you with admiration.

"It's common knowledge, really..." you blushed and looked in the opposite direction.

物の哀れ mono no aware ~ appreciating the beauty of something impermanent, also known as ephemeral beauty, such as the cherry blossom. Although it is a sight to behold, there are undertones of sadness, knowing that that moment is not everlasting.

Quietly and peacefully, the two of you made your way toward the coffee shop which was mere minutes away from the school. The trip was peppered with conversation here and there. Okuyasu enjoyed asking you about your home life and seemed genuinely interested. You explained your had lived in (the country/ a small town/ a big city), but you'd adapt to Morioh soon enough because you had no choice in the matter. You didn't enjoy sharing a ton of information about yourself but you welcomed the friendly gesture. He was the only person thus far that you had developed any sort of relationship with and you were immensely grateful for that.

"This is it! Take a seat, [F/N]," Okuyasu said as he pulled a chair out for you. You smiled and slung your bag on the back of the chair as you sat down. He sat across from you, laying his bag on the ground next to his chair. A man from the inside of the store greeted you both and asked what you wanted. You ordered your drink exactly as you like it prepared. Okuyasu ordered a regular coffee with milk and sugar. The afternoon was lovely. Other townspeople and a few students gathered in and around the coffee shop but it remained fairly quiet. The two of you continued to chat about daily life until a voice from afar interrupted.

"OKUYASU!!" You glanced and spotted a student of your age across the street from the shop. He looked both ways and jogged across the pavement, approaching the table. Okuyasu, looking surprised, returned the greeting.

"Josuke... I thought you were busy," Okuyasu stated in a suggestive manner.

Josuke was about to take a seat when he looked over at you. Before he could respond to Okuyasu, he squinted his eyes as he chuckled awkwardly.

"Oh, yeah, I just remembered something, haha~~ I'll talk to you later, Okuyasu..." still smiling sheepishly, Josuke shoved his hands in his pockets and casually strolled away, the opposite of how he approached.

That was unusual. He didn't even say hello to me...

A little hurt, being new to town and everything, you didn't give him another thought. You and Okuyasu finished your afternoon together and parted ways.
