The girl was kind, she was one of the few who actually saw us for what we were. She trusted us with her troubles and in turn we gave her hope. Hope that there was something better for her, in her life or her death, that whatever happens she had a place among us.
The girl came at midnight.
We'd never seen her before, never seen anyone out alone in these plains. Tears streaked her face, she ran with her hand over her mouth so her sobbing wouldn't be heard."Please," she whispered, "I don't want to live here, I want to go home." We did not reply, we cannot speak, so we just kept shining.
"She hates me now. I don't want her to hate me," She paused so she could try control her sobbing, "I don't want to let her go, she hates me. Why, why, why! Why me! Why do I have to suffer when others get to live a happy life! Why does Narla have to hate me! Why-" She looked up, saw the darkness and light we brought. Her mouth opened and closed as she took us in, but she didn't seem afraid, only awed.
"Hello stars."
Every night, she came back. Sometimes happy, sometimes sad. Sometimes a skeptic and sometimes a dreamer. Yet always curious to learn more about us.
We listened to every story she told us and comforted her when they took over her emotions took over. We learnt her past and what she dreamed of for her future.
"Shadow!" Her head whipped to the side at the sound of her name.
"Shadow! Where are you?
She looked back at us with sadness written on her face, as if she knew something bad was going to happen but didn't know how to stop it. She got up, with her height as a beacon she became easy to find and they ran towards her. One girl frowned with distaste at the sight of her and another's face lit up with admiration. Her devil and her angel.
"Shadow! There you are, are you ready?" Said her angel. She looked at him for a few moments then slightly shook her head, as if she was shaking of whatever she was feeling without noticing that she was feeling anything inside.
"Where's your pack?" sneered her devil, her biggest devil, the hardest to face. A devil that once was an angel.
"I don't have one." She told her devil, her face looked cold but underneath we could see the longing eating her insides, the longing for the angel to come back.
"You need a pack if you want to come with us, and it is kind of too late to go back into the town." The devil sneered.
"Who ever said that I was going to run away with you guys?"
Her angel stepped in, trying to stop the banter between the girls, "You said so."
"Ah, I told you to meet me here, I never said anything about leaving."
Her devil hissed, "Cunning little thing, just like a shadow, gonna tell on us? Or have you already told?"
"No! Shadow would never do such thing!"
"Listen to your boyfriend Narla," She hissed, "This is why I came," she pulled out a bundle of fabric to everyone's confusion, but as she unwrapped the fabric she revealing a knife hidden between the folds. People scrambled back, the cowards ducking behind the fearless and the fearless protecting the cowards with their lives
"Shadow, please this isn't who you are," The angel said, stepping forward like he was herding a wild animal.
"No it isn't," She agreed. She turned the knife to herself and shoved it as hard as she could into her own chest. We took her pain, we did not want her to suffer. Not the girl who trusted us with her secrets.
So we looked down at her as people swarmed her with compliments and confessions. We looked down as her grey slip-on turned red with blood.
And she looked straight back at us.
So when she lay dying we took her in our arms.
Our Shadow.
