Chapter 1
*Cassandras P.O.V*
Everyday I wake up and find that those dreams were not real. That's what haunts me the most in my life. The village I live in was peacefull and friendly. There were no wars and no dissagreements. But now the life I once knew dissapeared. Everyday's a struggle for survival. The weak and sick never make it. My parents didnt make it, because of me. I am the reason they died.
Laying there in my bed thinking about my parents has set a depressing mood on me. I knew I shouldnt have wasted time laying in my bed but I could'nt help it. Today was a sunday morning and my aunt expected me to get ready and go with her to the church before the bells rang. The bells.. They are horrible. The bells signal the upcomming of the so called knights. Whoever are outside during the knights arrival get slaughtered on sight and dont have a chance to fight back.
Hurrying out of bed and grabbing my dress replacing my nightgown I wore to bed. I ran down the stairs to where I heard my aunt calling my name. We had a small cottage, it was broken down and gets cold at night but we didnt complain because it was better than sleeping outside and getting your head chopped off. When I reached my Aunt Beth waiting at the door saying she was angry was an understatement. Keeping my head down and my eyes to the ground we hurried towards the church. It was almost noon. We had to get to the church before the bells rang.
Running down the street I could see the church buliding getting bigger as we got closer to it. The church was the last buliding to stand when the war came and everything else had to be rebuilt. Being near the building reminded me of when my mom would take me to the church. I was so young, I was enchanted by the stones glistening as the sun was up and how the forest around the back made me feel as if anything can happen, But now everythings lost to me.
Reaching the church doors I silently opened them up for my Aunt Beth. People now a days never go to church because they're scared to leave the protection of theyre houses. The eerie silence inside the church has made the whole town seem like it doesnt exsist. Listening to the echoes of Aunt Beths and my footsteps inside the empty stone church made my stomach churn. I had a very bad feeling about today but I could'nt tell my aunt or she would have left me with no shelter to live under.
Aunt Beth wasn't really my aunt I just had to call her that. She said its because shes been taking care of me that she deserves a title. Whatever that ment. Dont get me wrong, Im not the ungrateful type its just she has always been cold towards me and wouldnt show any warmth at all. As we kneeled down in front of the statue saying our prayer then only thing that was on my mind were the bells. They were going to be ringing soon and we had to stay inside to avoid those cursed knights.
As I waited for Aunt Beth to finish her prayers I let my mind wander towrads the days when I was carefree. I absolutely miss my parents and my friends. "Cassandra" I looked up to see that Aunt Beth was sitting there calling my name. She was starring at my cheek when I noticed that I felt something wet upon them.
Wiping my tears that have fallen I replied. " Yes Aunt Beth?". It took ahwhile for her to respond. I think she was choosing for something right to say as I was just crying moments ago. " We should start leaving now and we will make it back to the cottage before the bells. I nodded in agreement because I didnt really want to think for myself right now.
We walked out of the church doors and went the way we normally do when we leave the church. As we turned a corner I caught a glimpse of something dark. Aunt beth stopped right in her tracks and as I tried to get her to move she planted her feet onto the ground. The expression on her was like as if she has seen a ghost. I was starting to panic because the bells were going to ring soon and we were not even close to the cottage.
Aunt Beth finally snapped out of her haze like state and started to run dragging me along with her. " Aunt Beth he have to hurry before the bells ring!" I yelled trying to get her attention. " That's nothing compared to what I saw, Cassandra! We have to stay away from the cottage or else something would happen!" Aunt beth said between her pants of breath.
Stay away from the cottage? Thats the craziest thing I have ever heard in my entire life! We cannot stay away from it or we would get slaughtered by the knights. I needed to persuade Aunt Beth to come back home with me. Then my worst nightmare happened, The bells were ringing.
