Chapter 6: Why does everyone keep asking her that?

“Kelli, are you even listening? Our favorite part is coming up!” Jane whined snapping her from her thoughts. Kelli smiled weakly at Jane who was currently poking her in the side. She had come over this evening to bake some cookies and watch Pride and Prejudice with her. The six hour A&E version of Pride & Prejudice.  [AN: Kelli and I watch it religiously.] They had finished baking an hour ago and had settled down to watch the remainder of the film. It was currently at one of their favorite parts where Elizabeth stands up to Darcy’s disagreeable aunt. “There’s nothing like a little row in the garden.”

“Yeah,” Kelli said softly. It had been three days since Tasha’s phone call had ruined everything for her. Once she had announced her pregnancy everything had gone downhill from there. Tasha had tearfully asked Kelli to help her out by seeing what Nick’s reaction would be to an unexpected pregnancy. Kelli had agreed even telling Tasha that Nick and her were just friends.

[FLASHBACK TO PHONE CONVERSATION]

“I feel kind of bad for forcing you two together like that,” Tasha sniffed. “Is it weird that I’m happy you two didn’t work out?”

“No,” Kelli said softly. “We were just destined to only be friends.”

“Do you promise not to tell anyone about the pregnancy until you figure out how Nick would feel about it? I don’t want people to pity me.”

“Of course,” Kelli had choked out. “I’ll call you once I’ve found out how he feels, okay?”

“Okay,” Tasha said happily. “Kel, I know I’ve been a lot of trouble for you lately. Thanks for helping me out.”

“No problem,” Kelli said hanging up.

[BACK TO THE PRESENT]

She supposed it was wrong of her to not tell Nick that moment, but she had been unable to do so. He had found her in the hallway and tossed her over his shoulder carrying her down to the kitchen for a warm breakfast. He fed her toaster waffles and some cut up fruit punctuating each bite with a kiss. It had all been so perfect. So she continued to put off asking Nick about surprise babies. She wasn’t sure why she had lied so easily to her cousin. She just didn’t want to share Nick, but she had no choice. Nick was an honorable guy just like his brother Joe. If he knew Tasha was pregnant with his child then he would do the right thing, and her time with Nick would end abruptly.

“Okay, what’s up?” Jane asked turning off the television. “You aren’t watching at all.”

“I am too watching,” Kelli protested.
