Olivia, Age 14

"He stood me up for Sophie Carmichael." I cried into my best friend, Luke's shoulder.

The most popular boy in our grade, Zack Marshall, asked me to be his date to the formal a week ago and he stopped by my locker today, during lunch to tell me that he was going with Sophie Carmichael, the prettiest, richest, meanest and popular girl in our grade.

"He could've told me a few days before the formal. Now, I'm dateless. I don't even want to go to the formal anymore." I cried harder on his shoulder.

"Shhh, don't cry Liv, he's not worth it." Luke says as he hugs me tightly and rubs my back, not caring if I got his shirt wet from my tears.

"I thought he liked me." I burst into another sobbing fit.

"If Zack can't see how beautiful you are, it's either he is stupid or blind, or both." he chuckled a bit trying to lighten my mood.

"You think I'm beautiful?" I asked looking up at Luke. He tucked a strand of hair behind my ear and wiped the tears in my eyes. I then felt something I never should have felt for my best friend. There were butterflies in my stomach and my heart was beating faster than it originally was.

No. I cannot feel this way towards Luke. He's my best friend. Everything will be ruined if I liked Luke.

"Well, of course, I do. You're the most beautiful girl ever, Liv and I am proud to call you my best friend." he says proudly.

Best friend? He basically friendzoned me. I actually thought for a second there that he liked me.

"And, if you don't have a date to the formal, I'll be your date." he says

"Really? I thought you were going with Chelsea Gallagher?" I looked at him curiously with a bit of a shocked expression on my face.

"There are other boys lined up to be Chelsea's date." he shrugs not caring that he gave up his date to the formal with Chelsea who was the second most popular girl in school and Sophie's best friend.

I can't believe this boy. He would give up his date, who may I remind you is his crush, to go to the formal, with his loser of a best friend and be her date.

"Of course, I would, Olivia. As I said, you're my best friend and you're more important than any other girl."

Oops, was I speaking my thoughts aloud?

"Yes you were, again." he giggled then sighed, "And don't call yourself a loser. You're better than almost all the girls in school. You're one hundred percent you and you don't try to be like someone else." He kissed the top of my head and hugged me tightly, as he brushed his fingers gently through my hair.

I shook off the little "feelings" I had for Luke back there. I needed to stop thinking of Luke in that way. It wouldn't last. I always thought of Luke as a brother. Nothing more.
